Unable to rename workout type on Fitbit app

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

Has the ability to rename a workout type been removed in 4.04?

Previously I've been starting and stopping workouts via the "Martial Arts" exercise shortcut on my Charge 5, and then going into the workout record via the exercise tab in the app and renaming the workout with a custom name to reflect specifically what I had been doing [e.g., "Class", "Form Practice", "Weapon Training", etc.]

Now the only thing that seems to be editable is the start and stop time for the workout.

Is there something obvious I'm missing?

There is a workaround that allows you to recategorize your exercises with app versions v4.00 thru v4.09. But, as of version v4.10, google disabled that. I have suspected for some time now that google intends to destroy the fitbit brand. Now that they are intentionally crippling the app, I am 100% convinced.

Yes sad big corporates listen to the customer/consumer less and less. I will never understand it as we use it everyday so our comments about usage needs should be a critical part of implementing the best layout which in turn will only increase sales and popularity of their product.
I wonder if google watch consumers have same issues ? Interesting
definitely won’t be updating as I edit title nearly daily as I do boxing and closest preset is kickboxing . Thankyou everyone for the heads up on this .

Great news as of earlier this week I can re name exercises on android, havent tried on my iPad yet but I could never rename on my samsung galaxy before.

What gets me is fitbit nevet puts out global replies saying sorry but don't worry, we're working on it apart from testing updates before releasing them 🙄

Hi,

This was a really useful work-around (although of course shouldn't have been necessary in the first place) - however now even this doesn't work!

I always start runs on the app rather than on my fitbit watch, because that's the only way to get split times in my earphones. When selecting to start a new exercise the app has always defaulted to 'Walk', and I change it to 'Run'. A month or two back, after an earlier update, the App started ignoring this, so that when I finished the run on the app I'd find it had been changed back to a walk, with no obvious way to change it back. I found this work-around on the forum, and was delighted that not only did it allow me to correct the exercise category, but also to see the exercise shown in the old format we had before the latest series of updates (including duration to the second, not the nearest minute!). However, since the last update a few days ago, even this no longer works - when I get to and select 'Review your Data' it just returns me to the main exercise page.

I've just wasted an hour of my life on the phone to one of Fitbit's hapless 'Customer Support' agents, who was completely unable to help beyond a vague suggestion that this would 'hopefully' be fixed in a future update, timescale unspecified. The only thing that stopped me shouting down the phone at him was a sense that his must be a pretty stressful job these days, given what Google are doing to the App!

It's getting harder and harder not to conclude that Google are deliberately killing Fitbit. I'll definitely be voting with my feet; my Charge 5 is less than a year old and I'd have expected to use it for at least another couple of years, but the app is now so unfit for purpose that I can't wait that long.

We are all come to that conclusion. It’s pretty depressing. Users are downright angry.

I agree; there was literally no reason to remove this feature. I have also
had the problem of categorizing my workout to “run,” and it recategorizes
it to “walk” and then gives me no way to fix it. I’ve been with Fitbit for
ten years, but I’m dumping them in favor of an Apple SE, which is arriving
on Monday. I’m giving my Sense 2 to my husband who doesn’t care about
mislabeled exercises! Google has absolutely killed the Fitbit, and not in a
good way.

Well said @Rod_O

I was fortunate to see a post about release v4.10 before I "upgraded" from v4.09. One of the "bug fixes" in release v4.10 was to disable the workaround that enabled us to recategorize our exercises. But I didn't know how it was disabled until I read your post. In addition to being able to recategorize our exercises, the workaround allowed us to view our exercises using the pre-google user interface. Now we can't. This was important to me, not only because the old version was far superior, but because it was accurate. The new version drops the seconds off the exercise duration (e.g. 0:30:59 is reported as 0:30). This is significant! Also, the pace calculation in the new version is wrong because it uses the truncated duration.

$#!T!  I don't know how this happened, but my fitbit app has been "upgraded" to v4.10 even though I have automatic updates turned off. Now I have to logon to the fitbit.com dashboard to get my actual exercise duration and do a manual calculation to determine my pace.

That’s happened to me as well. I was deliberately holding off upgrading so I could still amend workout types and see the data. However my app was upgraded automatically without me asking a few minutes ago. Really irritating

I just figured out that you can still edit workout type on the website on our dashboard! It’s a hassle but possible. I sure hope they go back to the old way!

The last time I logged into Fitbit on the web site I couldn’t find a way to change the exercise type there - can you give us the details of the way you found to do so?

Yes. As of yesterday the work-around has now gone for me. 2 hours of tennis is simply sport and mowing the lawn yesterday was identified as ‘outdoor bike’! Seriously!? Fitbit are currently sending surveys via email. Please don’t hold back! Give them both barrels!

Go on the site! On your dashboard, make sure you’re on Activities and you’ll see the little pencil beside the name of your exercise! You can click on that and edit it!

The only way to change the name of your workout since the lastest app update, is by going on their website. Once you’re on your dashboard, make sure you’re under Activities and you’ll see the little pencil next to your exercise. Click on it and you can edit. I think it’s ridiculous this can no longer be done in the app by one simple step.

The ability to do this has gone away in the latest update that I downloaded on Thursday. Now when I try to review data for the Exercise logs, it just goes back to the exercise page. I called Fitbit support and all they could say was that there is no way to change the activity (never has been), even though I have been doing it this way since it was changed.

Yes. This is sooooooooo sad. Fitbit is gone. Worth zero to us users. I cant understand what the point of all this down grading is? Who would want buy Fitbit with an app this lousy when all the competiors offer better ones!?

Fitbit brand was in top league, but dropped deep down to dirt. Feel so sorry for this. Lost my trust on developers at Fitbit. Had to buy a new device. Not a Fitbit.

I’m glad it’s still available, but there’s no way I’m going to go to the
Fitbit website on a computer to do something I used to be able to do with a
tap. It was bad enough having to go through three or four screens to get
there! Between Fitbit re-categorizing my workout to something incorrect and
then making it EXTREMELY difficult to fix; and then getting rid of the
00:00:00 time format on my runs to a much more vague hour/minute (no
seconds) format…I’m about done with Fitbit.

This makes me so angry. Why would they take away a workable, if difficult, work-around? Next watch will not be a Fitbit.

Thanks @Jen005 !!

I just hope google doesn't implement code to disable this workaround like they did with the app workaround.
