Unable to set Stride Length correctly.

Hello,

A few days ago I saw that my FitBit app was reporting way many daily kilometres and I realised that maybe the stride length which is automatically set in the Fitbit app is incorrect.

I used this article as a reference and went to check how many steps I did on a track where I knew the distance before hand.

I went to a track of 800 meters and did exactly 1100 steps. According to the formula mentioned in the above article,

Divide the total distance (in feet) taken by the number of steps to get your stride length.

So 800 meters is 2624 feet, 2642/1100 = 2.386

I went to my app and set 2.386 as my stride length, but then I realised that my stride length is 95 cms according to Fitbit. So since 2.386 is too small I ended up setting my stride length as 23 cms.

But now, the problem is that my distances are very less. Just to give you an example, this was before I adjusted the stride length and then one week after:

Can someone help me get my stride length right? I am about 181 centimetres in height, male, asian, and for sure my stride length is not like normal people as I don't take big strides. Everyday I see people are faster than me on the way to the bus station.

Any help would be super appreciated.

@SunsetRunner   First, congratulations on walking and counting around the whole track.  I would have stopped at a shorter distance marker.

You list your height in cm, so let's keep it metric.  800 m in 1100 steps calculates to a stride length of 72.7 cm.  If you have your distance set in ft/mi, then 2.386 ft = 28.6 in.

Fitbit only automatically adjusts running stride length if you are doing a GPS connected run AND have the automatic stride length option toggled to ON.  It does not adjust walking stride length.

I hope this helps.

Thank you very much. I will now use this as my stride settings.

I would like to have automatic GPS assisted stride length for running, but since I want to manually use my stride length for walking, I cannot use GPS for running only.

I will use the similar procedure to calculate my stride length for running. Thank you for helping me.
