What to do when dongle stops working

I have a MacBook Air, with all the current application updates.  My computer will not longer read my dongle when it's inserted.  This is the only device that isn't working in the USB ports.

We were on vacation and I lost my charger, so the fitbit Charge died, and when I got home, bought a new charger, and charged it, the fitbit now won't sync with the computer to reset the time on the fitbit, so I need the dongle USB to work.  I keep seeing the fitbit icon in my tool bar at the top of my computer, but with the exclamation sign, meaning it's not picking it up.

Any suggestions?  The dongle is about 18 months old - fitbit charge itself is probably six months old (the band on the one I initially bought broke a couple of weeks before the warranty ran out, so they replaced it)

Usually when a dongle fails, it is because one of the pins has become misaligned from being put in and taken out. I have not removed mine in over a year on my desktop. I assume it will not work in any other ports either so that rules out a bad port. I wouldn't keep trying because you culd damage a port. You can buy a new one here for $20. Amazon also has them, but don't buy a cheaper 3rd party one. It's not worth the chance of a damaged USB port not to mention it might not work at all.

Thanks, I have ordered a new one.  Your description makes sense, as a few weeks ago I noticed it was working sporadically, and when I would jiggle it around a bit, it would work again.

I try not to remove it and put it back in often, but sometimes I need the extra port for something else and have to remove it; I will try to be more careful in doing this in the future.
