Google is totally destroying this company. This is the most incredibly poor activation process I’ve ever experienced and it still doesn’t work. Further, googles requirements for a kids step counter are incredibly intrusive. Ive had several Fitbit’s but my wife got me an Apple Watch so haven’t used one in a few years. My 1st grader is in run club and wanted a fitness watch, was going to get him a cheap one but saw the Fitbit and remembered liking them and figured he’d like a quality device. Oh my god do I regret it. I’ve spent two days going in circles, every step of the way being told I was finally there, only having to register for more and more Google garbage I don’t want or want my kids to have. Ive migrated to Google, created family accounts, created Google accounts for kids, downloaded new apps, updated iOS, tried 3 different devices and it keeps going on and on. I will never buy another Fitbit product again and I’m kind of bummed about it, I loved the ease of my old Fitbit products. Simply put, Google has made this beyond insane and intrusive for a kids watch (or anyone for that matter), I’ve graduated from anger and frustration to shock really.  Lastly, I’ve talked to support 3 times, the last guy basically agreed the activation process was completely crazy and broken and that coming here and letting Google know was the only chance Fitbit might have to change it. So here I am…

Same Christmas fail here. 2 7yo boys crying because we can't activate the devices despite following all the instructions.

Day 2 now and still no luck.

My brother who works at Google as a developer doesn't even know how to get these stupid things working and connected.

My kids don't have their own devices let along google accounts they're 6 & 9 for goodness sake.

They're both on my Family Link - so why can I just link that to my fitbit account?? Can't be that difficult.

Now I need to break it to my 6 & 9 year old that Santa has really messed it up this year and that they'll need to go back. (hopefully they still believe next year in the big man)

I've been following this discussion having experienced the disappointment myself months ago. Massive increase in posts these last few days. Can't believe Fitbit would shoot themselves in the foot like this by not resolving it before Christmas.

I've made this suggestion before (and had it removed by the community moderators) but everybody who has experienced this shambles should make it known to their friends, family colleagues, and online reviews.

Unfortunately this issue will not be resolved just by more people posting here.

I have enough accounts to manage as is. My life seems to be a constant stream of fingerprints, authenticator requests, 2FA codes and password reset emails. Setting up another account for this (and it's still a pain to set up) is not happening.

Here are the maximum necessary (and tolerable) steps:

  • Install app.
  • Sign in with Google.
  • Pair devices.
  • Thanks dad!

Anything more than that is amateur hour.

Day 3 onto support today and they have told me that it's not even compatible with Android, another Google company. Like you couldn't make it up. He said they work better with iPhone 🤷🏻‍:female_sign:

Anyway, I'm sending mine back. Not wasting another moment of the Christmas break on them. Will get different one for the kids.

Google have ruined Fitbit and will lose plenty of loyal customers because of it.

Hi Lizzy,

This is all pretty straightforward. After a bit of messing around, vpn out of province on my computer… etc, I was able to create a google account for one of my daughters. When I log in to fitbit and click add user to add her, it says that my region is not supported. What is the work around for this? I don’t want to be constantly using a vpn to make this work. So far i have been unable to get the watch to start up. FYI - we are in Quebec.

Thanks,

@Rjh85, I'm in Quebec too. You will have to use a VPN ( I used it as I'm in the USA) again on the phone / tablet to be able to add the child account. Once the child account will be active on the device (including all step to set a supervised divice), the VPN will not be needed anymore.

We have been struggling for three weeks. Got different answers from the helpdesk. Today we received the final one. We don't have an extra device (and surely not gonna buy one) and we are not going to make an extra google account. Our son already had a google account, but that is an 'old' one and is not working with fitbit in the family link.

Tomorrow we are returning the device. To be helpful to others, here you can read the final advice from the Fitbit support desk (The Netherlands).

------------------------------

To successfully create a Kid Fitbit account, it's important to note that only one account can be logged into the phone during the sign-up process. This restriction is in place to ensure the security and privacy of Kid Fitbit settings. Having multiple accounts logged into the same phone can cause technical conflicts and prevent a Kid Fitbit account from being created correctly.
If you are trying to create a Kid Fitbit account for your child and another account is currently logged into the phone, we kindly recommend that you use a different phone or device for the account creation process. This ensures a smooth and seamless setup, without technical hurdles
The main reason for having only the child's Google account logged into the phone is to ensure the privacy and security of the family setup within the Family Group. When a child's account is part of a Family Group, certain permissions and access levels are established.
We understand that privacy is of the utmost importance, and we take this matter seriously. This setup ensures that each family member's accounts remain separate and private, while at the same time allowing for the necessary monitoring and control for the child's account within the Family Group.

Ok so my kids 5, she doesn't have a Google device. I just want her to count her steps and to see what time it is why is this there most difficult and frustrating task I've ever gone through? I'm now trying to set up an old Galaxy s7 with her new Google account but when I try to sign into HER fit bit account with MY info, it won't let me. Won't even give the option to log in using Google account.

You have developed the most user unfriendly experience I have ever come across. I've wasted hours of my life trying to set up this dumb watch so my daughter can use it but I'm hit with road blocks and stupid hoops at every turn. Get it together.

Bought ace 3 as a Charismas gift for my kid. Spent hours to figure it out how to set up. Called support but not very helpful. Finally, I got it working. First, need to add child and parent in the same google family group. You can do this in your google account setting without installing the google family link app. Second, install Fitbit app on the phone and log in with your kid's Google account, and it will ask for the parent's consent. Third, once the above is done, the phone will try to pair with ace 3 using Bluetooth. From here, it is pretty straightforward. Hope this helps. It is an absolutely frustrating process.

this advice is the BS. Based on my experience, multiple google accounts can be saved on the same phone. You just need to log in Fitbit using kid's account. If you have the existing kid's account in the google family group, it will work. You do not have to create a new one. Just make sure the parents account have supervision permission if it is not the family manager.

That's not the case for android devices as discovered on this forum. On android devices you cannot add child and adult accounts to the same profile. It's a bit messed up.

Well.. simply put, you can create a new account on fitbit.com with an email adress other than google, and refuse to merge to google. Then, you'll be able to use all the simple youtube videos that show how to connect an Ace3 watch 😉

No you can't. The amount of people talking absolute crap on this forum is mind boggling.

I tried it before posting it ( i did that yesterday, mind you)... and it worked.  It saved me from explaining to my kids that because of where we live, they cant use their watches. Did you try it before simply saying it was bull? It really was unnecessry jugemental

@Fleurdelysée - what kind of phone do you have? Does your child have a dedicated separate device?  There are many variables here and for most of the people here saying "it does work" have either been iPhone users, or their child has their own smartphone.  For Android users, it doesn't work unless your child has their own phone device.

We are android users and have used my old samsung phone and our google tablet, as effectively both my children needed their own device. But my husband successfully created a new fitbit account on fitbit.com without linking to google, and it is how we did it. Took 10 mins instead of trying hopelessly to create google email accounts for.my kids and linking them to family link (creating email for kids under 13 is prohibited where i live...)

Thanks Fleurdelysee - I hope that also works for others.  For my household, we unfortunately don't have old phones or tablets for my child to use.  And the Ace 3 required a "child account" to pair.  I couldn't use a regular email address - it had to be marked as a 'child email address'.  I had tried your method prior contacting Fitbit support - who told me that I needed a 'child account' and Google Family Link to make it work. Sounds like a 'patch' workaround for some sort of USA based Android settings.  Sadly - after spending about 4 hours and seeing a frustrated child, I decided it wasn't worth the hassle.  I have a Fitbit watch and app already on my phone - so that may also be part of the issue.
