Started a couple of days ago with screen blacking out. It was still registering activity, etc. I just couldn't see it. I reset using the cord. Next day same thing. Needed to reset it. Worked about an hour. Had to reset it again. That didn't even last 5 minutes. Now it will show only if plugged in. It has stopped registering activity, I don't have a heart rate. Nothing. At. All. The battery is full. I have restarted my phone. I have attempted to manually sync. Initially it couldn't find the device but now it captures it but shows nothing. I have cleaned the contact points. It is able to charge. I am doing a fundraiser for something and this is how I am supposed to log my activity. Excellllllent!
Edit- I have uninstalled and reinstalled fitbit app. Now it can't find my device at all. The device no longer buzzes when it is attached to the cord altho it will reset when I push the button the 3 times it doesn't buzz every time I push the button. If I disconnect and reconnect is will buzz when I push the button only some of the time. I even tried different ports on the laptop.
Currently it will not even show a battery when I tap it connected to the laptop. I think I have exhausted all the options I can find on the forum.
Sorry for multiple edits-
I figured out if I disconnected it while it had the clock on it seems to currently work to register activity but is struggling to syn. It just did but the numbers are not what my fitbit shows me when I tap the screen (short by more than a few steps). It is noon and I have taken 140 steps. It lost all of yesterday afternoon until today. Who knows how long this will last 😞

Have never had any trouble with my alta until yesterday. It still works and it appears to be logging my activity but the screen is blank. tried to re start it and it is still blank.

As of yesterday afternoon I can no longer access unless it is plugged in. I reset, for about the 20th time, then it told me to go to fitbit.com/setup. I Went there and it told me my fitbit was set up already. So- I unpaired from the app, hard reset, took off bluetooth, uninstalled app and started all again. Nothing. If I am plugged in it will show all the options when I tap otherwise black screen. If I disconnect it is black screen.

Mine is also totally Black, but unlike yours is not recording miles, steps, or active minutes. No on my android phone, or my ipad, or the app on my computer, or the actual webpage. It is 85% charged, tells it last did a sync at 12:22 pm today. It's now 3:44. After my walk I mowed the yard and none of that is showing up anywhere. I rebooted the phone, then uninstalled the app and re-installed it. I plugged the unit in to see if that would reset it. It didn't. I turned off bluetooth and then back on and tried again. I've tried to force sync and all devices and it hasn't worked anywhere. I unpaired which was suggested on the actual webpage when I tried to sync and now it can't pair it. Additionally, I have 2 very bright green lights on the back of the Alta. Edited to add when I plug it in, I do not feel or here the vibration you typically do when you plug in.

Once my Fitbit screen went blank it did not track any steps on any device.
I tried all of the same things you have done with no luck as well.
I have pretty much figured it is toast.
Too bad because I really liked it when it was working.
I guess I will just have to rely on my phone tracker.

Finally was able to reset mine with the charge cord button, but none of the steps were noted from when it went black forward. The light is still on very bright in the back, so doubt it's going to last very long. I really don't like how large the new units are, which is why I got this one from Amazon. I've had the zip, the Flex, Alta, and Alta HR. The Alta and Alta HR are far more attractive then the new replacement they have, which looks more sporty and more like going backward to the Flex. Will probably have to purchase something for it's replacement. Booo I wish fitbit would stop coming out with new units and improve the ones they had.
