It seems like I will only get an answer if I create a topic myself. so...
Alta doesn't work if not connected to the cable.
While it's connected everything looks good. I can sync, tap, etc.
After I disconnect, I can keep the screen alive if I keep taping it non stop (so battery is NOT the problem). I've tested and I can keep it going for minutes, as long as I keep taping.
While I am walking and taping it's also in sync with the iPhone app and I can see the "full battery" status and the steps counting up. Everything else also works fine for as long as I keep the screen alive.
The problem is once I stop taping, and the screen goes dark, it doesn't respond to taping anymore.
The screen doesn't turn on again. And the connection with the phone is lost. Basically it shuts down completely and won't turn on again unless plugged.
It has the latest 21.40.2 firmware version
I've tried to contact support and the only troubleshooting advice they gave me was
1: clean the connections
2: recharge
3: restart
Seriously. That's ridiculous "support"
And then they sent me a 35% coupon to be used within 30 days, to buy another piece of their garbage.
It's infuriating the lack of "care" from customer support, the lack of quality in the product, and absence of a solution that seems to be purely caused by software malfunction.
looking at the community here, it looks like it's a very big and THE most common reported problem. Which looks like a case for recall or some firmware update/rollback. Not a case to give discount coupons for next purchase.
Does Fitbit really think that after we purchase one of their products, and it stops working, and we get no support nor care, that we will still buy another one?
I am looking forward if there's a solution for this problem or the device is just obsolete now.

First, Same thing is happening to us. I bought an Alta for my daughter who is running cross country and doesnt need a smart watch but something like a Fitbit to help her track distance, exercise, etc. Opened the watch, removed the stickers and charged it. It works only when connected to the PC (for now) and will not turn on at all if I remove the cable. Battery is at 100%.
I read on this page that there are not Fitbit moderators here - it's users only, which is a shame. All support board should have a moderator for customer assistance.

@CMartinezJ you're lucky cause if it's new you can probably get a free replacement. In my case the warranty has already expired. If you contact support via chat they might trigger the replacement for you. Although given the amount of people complaining about the same exact problem and the lack of support, I would simply ask the money back, return the product and stay away from fitbit.

@AnonymousRunner no such luck. I reached out to support, went through all the steps, explained the situation, Nothing. The watch didn't work. They said they'd send me a follow up email with additional instructions - turns out the email says the warranty expired in 2016?! We literally just got this watch as a gift to my daughter last week. Guess what I got? a 35% discount... what?! Said our device was first activated 5 years ago - I never once gave them any information on the watch and they are telling me a brand new watch was activated 5 years ago and now it has an expired warranty. Seriously... the worse experience I have had with an electronics company.

Sorry to hear that. I am also hopeless.
I really think they might be sabotaging their own devices to force us to buy new ones.
