Alta won’t receive text message notifications

Just set up a previously owned Alta to my phone. Was able to sync it up successfully but I do not receive notifications on the watch when I get texts. It will alert me about fitness but nothing when my phone receives a message. I’ve gone through and made sure everything is enabled in my phone and on the Fitbit app, and still nothing. I have an iPhone 11 Max Pro. Is the iOS system technology too new for this older Fitbit?
