Device not tracking Sleep Stages

Sleep stages are not working. For the previous 5 nights no sleep stages. Heart rate is being captured all night long so that is not the issue. I reset the device yesterday but no difference. Ideas?

Hi @Fitforlyfe, welcome to the Community Forums!

First, I'd like to appreciate your effort restarting your Alta HR prior to posting, thanks for bringing this issue to my attention. There are a few scenarios where you might see your sleep pattern (which shows your time asleep, restless, and awake) instead of sleep stages:

  • If you slept in a position that prevented your device from getting a consistent heart-rate reading or wore it too loosely. For best results, wear your device higher on your wrist (about 2-3 finger widths above your wrist bone). The band should feel secure but not too tight.
  • If you used the Begin Sleep Now option in the Fitbit app (instead of simply wearing your device to bed). For more information on automatic sleep tracking, see How do I track my sleep?
  • If you slept for less than 3 hours.
  • If your device’s battery is critically low.

For more information about why you see your sleep pattern, tap the actual sleep record that shows your sleep pattern and at the bottom you'll find a message explaining you the reason why Sleep Stages were not recorded.

Let me know if you have any additional questions.

I am having the same issue,  for the past 5 nights. I also reset my Fitbit yesterday, and got the same results. I can see my heart rate, so I know that is not the issue. I think that since there is more than one of us having the same issue, there is a problem somewhere. Please advise. Thank you.

Welcome aboard @mnmsmom, thanks for bringing this to my attention. Sorry for the delayed reply.

I appreciate the details that were shared in your post and for troubleshooting your Alta HR prior to posting. If you haven't already done so, can you please go to the actual sleep log and tap on it? At the bottom you should find an error message explaining you the reason why Sleep Stages were not generated. If such is the case, please send me a screenshot of the error message so we can move forward with this.

Keep me posted.

I have a new suspicion that the problem is a faulty HR monitor. It was showing my heart rate over 130 while sleeping when my resting rate is in the 50s. I just did a manual comparison while sitting here and my actual rate is 64 beats per min while Fitbit is showing 118.  There is a loose correlation between the heart rate showing extremely high while sleeping and sleep stages reverting to standard.

Thanks for your updates @Fitforlyfe, my apologies for the delayed reply again.

I appreciate the details that were shared in your post. Because of the fact that Sleep Stages use heart rate information in order to generate the detailed sleep graphs, the heart rate difficulties may be the root cause of your issue. That said, I recommend you to check our help article: Why don't I see my heart rate on my Fitbit device?, try the troubleshooting steps that are specified there and let me know if the issue persists.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

I am also having the same problem as well as extremely high heart rate (180-200) when sat down sedentary. I’ve been advised this is a software fault, Fitbit please do something to fix this ASAP.

Same boat here. No sleep tracking, crazy high heart rate. Affects all my calorie burn and active minute tracking also. So I basically just have a really expensive step counter that tells time.

Hello,

I was able to correct my issue. I just reset my tracker, and after that
everything was back to normal. All you have to do is connect the tracker to
the charger, plug it in, and push the button on the charger 3 times in 4
seconds. The tracker will vibrate, you will see the Fitbit logo, and the
tracker has been reset. I hope this helps you like it did for me. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, I have already tried a reset and it did
nothing.
