I am receiving multiple (about a dozen per day) calendar notifications, for events that have passed, or are hours and hours in the future. There is no rhyme or reason to the timing of the notifications. I searched the community blog and the only solution listed was to turn off calendar notifications. I am not going to do that, as the calendar notification functionality was one of my primary drivers in purchasing the device.

I appreciate the details that were shared in your post. To better assist you with this, can you please let me know which mobile device you're currently using? Also, when was the first time you experienced this? are you having difficulties with text and phone call notifications too? If you haven't already done so, I recommend you to check: How do I get notifications from my phone on my Fitbit device? to see that all the necessary requirements to receive notifications on your Fitbit are correctly configured and to try some troubleshooting steps.
