Heart rate accuracy

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

As others have posted, I'm having an issue where my heart rate is just way above anywhere it's been in previous years. It says I'm in the "fat burning" zone way more often than I actually am, and therefore my calorie needs are way off. I reset it using the charger and this fixed the problem, but it's recently started all over again. Do I just have to reset my Fitbit every week or so now? Is it because my Fitbit is a year or two old? This is super annoying as I chart all my calories love looking at my overall charts... except for the weeks when all my data is incorrect.

Hi @Ajdrawsquid, welcome to the Community Forums! Sorry for the delayed reply.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention and the details that were shared in your post, I totally understand how frustrating this matter can be for you and appreciate your effort troubleshooting this situation prior to posting too. To better assist you with this, can you please let me know when was the first time you recently experienced this and how many times since then? How many times you restarted your Alta HR?

Just as stated on your help site, as with all heart-rate tracking technology, accuracy is affected by personal physiology, device location on your arm, and type of movement. For a more accurate heart-rate reading:

  • Wear your Fitbit device on top of your wrist, and make sure the back of the device is in contact with your skin.
  • When you’re not exercising, wear your device a finger’s width above your wrist bone.
  • During a workout, experiment with wearing the device higher on your wrist (2 finger widths) for an improved fit. Many exercises such as bike riding or weight lifting cause you to bend your wrist frequently, which could interfere with the heart-rate signal if the watch is lower on your wrist.
  • Consider tightening your wristband before a workout and loosening it when you’re done. The wristband should be snug but not constricting (a tight wristband restricts blood flow, potentially

Keep me posted and let me know if you have any additional questions.

Thanks for your response! I first started noticing the elevated heart rate
readings after a workout in late December. It took me a while to figure out
that it was a glitch and not my actual heart rate (especially over winter
break, when I was getting Zumba-like readings while watching a move on the
couch). After my first restart, it was good for about a week before getting
weird again. The second reboot fixed the problem for a few days. I
restarted again this morning (this is probably the fifth or so reboot) and
unfortunately, it seems rebooting no longer is fixing the issue.

I've had this Alta HR for a couple years at least and never had an issue
with it reading my heart rate (when it's glitching like this it is also
unable to get a consistent read at night, so I'm not getting the detailed
sleep reports either). I have not changed anything about how I'm wearing
it, so I'm fairly confident that isn't the issue.

I'm wondering if it's just time to get a new Alta HR?

interesting. I was wondering why my resting hr and my exercise hrs were so high all of a sudden. I rebooted and guess I will reboot during every charge.
