Ok so on the alta hr advertisement page, in rathe specs it clearly states swim tracking as one of the features. So why is everyone (including the fitbit people) saying you have to take it off to swim? The advert even has a picture of a man swimming while wearing it! Do I buy it or not?

Can you provide a link to that page so we can tell fitbit to correct it as the Alta HR is not swimproof. As described in this help file, only the Flex 2 can be worn when swimming:

I see what you mean and you're right, the link goes to the SmartTrack feature page which covers both the Flex 2 and Alta. That only becomes clear when you scroll down to the bottom of that page.
It's a good job you checked before you bought!

The FitBit Alta is not swim proof. As far as I know the only swim proof FitBits are the Ionic, the Versa, and the fitbit Flex 2.

I received the fitbit in Oct as a birthday gift. I like it and it does say it is water resistant to 50 meters. I jumped in the pool the other day with it on. I stopped working. I called, and they said stick in a bowl of rice. I did. It did not work. I called again, and their response was tough luck. We'll give you a discount on a new one. Why would I buy a new one, when they won't stand by the one thats only 7 mos. old. Buy something else, where they stand behind their warranty

@miccimiller The alta line is not swim proof and has never been swim proof. I am sorry you were misinformed somehow, but it was misinformation. Where does it saynitnis water resistant to 50m? I have not seen that.

I have never seen an advertisement from Fitbit that says that the Alta HR (and, by extension, the Alta line) is waterproof.
Sadly, I believe, as @NellyG mentioned earlier, that you were misinformed. The Alta line has never been waterproof. The only waterproof trackers are the Flex 2, Ionic, and Versa. The other lines are water-resistant, meaning they shouldn't be submerged completely in water.

Hi there @miccimiller! Good to see you in the Community Forums! 🙂
I'd like to jump in and clarify a few things about the Fitbit Alta and Alta HR being or not swim-proof.
As our council members have stated, if you take a look at the help site (click here) you can see that it states that all Fitbit trackers and watches are water resistant, which means that they're rain-proof and splash-proof but you can only swim with the Fitbit Flex 2, Fitbit Ionic and Fitbit Versa.
For more information on how to use your Alta HR, take a look at this wear and care guide.
Anything else, we're here to help! 🙂

You might try using a hairdryer to dry it out then restart it. While I haven’t personally used this method on my fitbit devices, it does work to remove moisture buildup in car key fobs. Nothing to lose since you’ve indicated it’s not working anymore?

Hmm. I swim with mine on all the time. I wakeboard, surf, and jump in to cool off. Mine works fine!

Hi, I did not notice it is waterproof or not until our last vacation. I asked my wife to go swimming together while she was wearing an Alta HR. Only after she jumped in the pool she noticed the device was on her hand. We thought it was going to be some replacement but supprisingly the watch still worked perfectly til today after 5 months.
I said this because I saw so many ads are introducing this is not waterproof but don't know why, I think you can try but still have to say it is on your own risk.
Nice weekend

I had no problem to swim it it.
But , no possibility to get a credit for that activity.
Do it all week long on my vacation.
It would be nice to get a credit for the activity was done.
Use Costco.
2 years warranty.
