When I log manually a hike or walk with activity tracker it adds steps to my fit bit and to my dashboard but does not in any challenges I am in...is this normal?

Yes, that's normal. Manually logged steps (or steps synced from another app) do not count towards challenges, badges, or the total steps on your friends list.
I guess this is to stop anyone who tries to cheat but unfortunately it also affects those of us who manually log because we forget to wear our fitbit.
Is there a reason why you are manually logging?
