Why Bother with Logging Workouts?

If I'm wearing the device properly and it's measuring my heart rate accurately what is the point of logging the activity?  The device shows the calories burned, period... right?  So what is the added benefit?  And what happens if you log it but mislabel it?

You are right that there often is no reason to log an activity, and I think many problems are caused by logging workouts.

The simplest reason to log an activity is if you were not wearing the tracker, say if you are playing a contact sport where it might get damaged.

Otherwise, with no logging, the all-day totals get accumulated, and if that is your focus, there is no reason to do any logging.

But if you are focused on exercise sessions, you might be concerned about seeing a record of what you did which day, or maybe to be sure it counts as an exercise session.  If the activity is auto-recognized, there is still no need to log it, but not all exercises can be auto-recognized, and it is not always reliable at recognizing them.

On the models that have the exercise app, these can still be recorded using that, but the Alta HR does not have that capability.

 

One problem with logging an activity - it overrides all the data that was recorded for that time period and guesses calorie burn from parameters you enter, such as what you think your intensity was or how far or fast you walked.  But the calories are more accurate uisng the heart rate data that was actually recorded.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.
