Success by deleting the watch from account  and adding as new device following usual procedure it does update and now works

So in summary it seems the installation protocol is far more powerful than the normal update hope this helps

Hello @Soggyspaniel, welcome aboard to the Fitbit Community. Make sure your tracker is charged, since a firmware update can take several minutes and is demanding on the battery. If the tracker is not responding please try these steps:

  • Log out of your Fitbit App
  • Force quit the App
  • Restart your Charge 2, 3 times in a row
  • Turn off the Bluetooth
  • Shut off your phone and turn it on after 1-2 minutes
  • Turn on the Bluetooth
  • Log back into your Fitbit App
  • Update the Firmware version of your Charge 2
  • Sync right after finishing the update

Hope this helps and keep me updated how it goes.
