I have bought the fitbit charge 2 but can't get notifications working I have a Sony Xperia xz. The app is up and running so confused why notifications aren't plz help as I want to keep it but if I can't get it working then I will have to send it back

A common cause of missing notifications on the Charge 2 is when it is accidentally put into "do not disturb" mode. This is turned on / off by pressing and holding the button on the Charge 2. Could this be the problem here?
On the other hand it may just be that notifications don't work with the xperia xz - that phone isn't on the list of supported devices at www.fitbit.com/devices . Hopefully someone with that phone will be able to confirm either way before you run out of time to send it back.
