Issue started ~08/19/2024: Fitbit App (on Android) > Edit Exercise > update Activity (i.e., Workout to Walk) > Save > the change doesn't save. Uninstalling/reinstalling the app and restarting didn't fix it. Other ideas?

Fitbit - How to change exercise options
-
1. Open Fitbit App
2. Scroll down to …Days of Exercise
3. choose ‘Days of Exercise’
4. Choose ‘Add Exercise’
5. Choose ‘Log Activity’
6. Type exercise into ‘search bar’
7. hit Enter
8. Choose ‘Add’

I don't think you understand the issue. It's not about adding exercise. It's about editing something that has been auto-detected or an activity that we've started or stopped but need to change something on.
We can do all the steps to update the activity, be it time, type of activity, etc, it appears to save, but the activity reverts back to whatever Fitbit originally said for type or time. I shouldn't have to go in and manually add something to be able to have it correct, especially when the edit option exists.

Thank you however I want to start and track my exercise ie swim. After I finish and if my charge 6 fails to track the yards correctly, i can edit the actual exercise rather than manuallly add "a new exercise" for that swim session.
Example: I start my swim on my C6. I swim 1800 yds but C6 records 1200 yds. All other data is correct so I "edit" the yds to be 1800. I press "save" and the 1800 yds updates my 100yd split time and calorie burn. Seconds later the 1800 yds revert to 1200 yds and split time etc reverts as well.
Prior to August 2024 the edit and save function worked in the manner expected.
This feels like a permissions issue where the app is approved to post data to server (CREATE a new exercise record on server ) for an original \ new "sensed" or "added" activity but is blocked from posting data to server for any subsequent edits (once records are created they are locked from accepting EDIT commands)
If it is a permissions issue it seems like a switch of a flag to allow record edits would remedy it. All the authentication and security stuff is already in place.
---
actually, on second thought ... it's probably the EDIT command code in the app that is the failing component. Since the edit function worked before August the server side probably accepted EDIT commands.
More likely failed EDIT code in the updated app is the problem.

Not being able to edit activities like we could before August is annoying.
Even manually adding an activity doesn't work for me like it used to. I used to be able to create a custom activity (like pickleball, dragonboat practice, flag football, ball hockey, P90X), but now I'm restricted to some search list. The search list doesn't have the aforementioned activities but has popular items like "shoveling coal", "Tailoring, cutting", and the classic cardiovascular workouts "Eating (sitting)" and "sleeping" (I kid you not).
So now my exercise list (auto-detected or manual) is pretty much just Workout or Walk.

Hi @RiekoC! Did support give you a case number for reference? It's been over 4 months now so I'd like to follow up on status. I'm sure I'll probably get some standard generic response but I'd like to try anyway. Thanks!

Hello @5u2anne
I didn't get a case # when I submitted the issue for escalation. So far, I haven't seen or heard of any updates. It's been very frustrating for all of us.

Hi RiekoC, 5u2anne and others in this thread,
This thread is long and detailed so Summary first:
Summary: I believe the following will fix the 'edit activity' issue and perhaps increase the accuracy of tracking activities. Short answer is: Open Fitbit App. Go to Fitbit Devices. Delete the existing Charge 6 from the FitBit App devices. Then perform the process to add new device. This would be the process as if you had recently purchased the Charge 6
I performed the above and my initial testing indicates the issue was corrected. I could successfully edit activities. Edits were saved and did not revert to previous data points.
The following are the details aka 'Long and detailed thread':
I called Fitbit support today. For reference, my case number is 9-7567000037247. Support team member who helped me is Anna. Anna was exceptionally helpful.
When I called. An automated response asked me to select numeric options to get to correct department. I selected option 4 and after next question, I again selected option 4. I was then put in a queue for next support person.
After a moderate wait I was connected to support person Anna.
I fully explained the 'edit activity function and its failure to update' situation. I provided detailed examples. I explained the documented frustration expressed by the Fitbit community since August 2024. I referred Anna to the Fitbit community "Community - Platform - Android App - Re: Edits to Exercise Activity is Not Saving" for detail.
Anna put me on hold to check with other support team. She returned and asked me if I had tried trouble shooting. I explained all of the steps I had repeatedly performed. Including: On the watch I had performed the 'settings' 'restart watch' multiple times. On my phone I had uninstalled and reinstalled app several times. I confirmed that all of my 'Units of measurement' settings were set to 'English' rather than metric. I was asked and confirmed that my Samsung Galaxy Operating System was running the most recent version.
Anna went back and forth to her technical support team. When she returned, she recommended opening the app on my phone and deleting the existing Charge 6 from my Fitbit devices and then performing the process to 're-add' my charge 6 to the devices in the Fitbit app as if it was a new device. Anna assured me that none of my past data would be lost. (Make sure you 'Synch' your data before performing the following. To access your Fitbit 'devices', open the Fitbit app and press the icon in upper left where 'charge 6' battery % is displayed. You will then see Charge 6 in devices. Press 'Charge 6' to access the 'Charge 6' features and information. In the screen you will see several icons 'gallery', 'wallet' etc. but to remove the Charge 6 as a device you press the 'trash can' icon in upper right corner of the screen. Once the deletion is completed, the Charge 6 will no longer show under devices. At that point you perform the process to add device in the same manner that you would add a newly purchased Charge 6 device. Once the Charge 6 has been recognized and pairing is completed with the phone, Anna had me go to phone settings - Apps - Fitbit to ensure all needed permissions were in place.)
To get detailed instructions "Google search" the following "google support: How do I get started with Fitbit Charge 6?"
Anna and I performed the 'deletion' of the charge 6 device and then the 'discovery and addition' of the charge 6 device. Anna then advised on ensuring the app had the necessary permissions to perform correctly.
All of this was performed successfully. Anna then asked me to monitor the device over the next several days to see if the issue was resolved and secondarily if the accuracy of the watch improved.
I will let this community know if these steps have improved the performance and have remedied the 'edit activity' issue. That said, I have in fact tried the edit function and it appears to be functioning correctly.
Long message but hopefully this is the process to reset and correct the 'edit activity' issue
Wishing all a great 2025

I've been using the app about 1-2 months and today accidentally forgot to turn off the activity tracking. So I've got an extra a half hour clocked. I've tried to edit it multiple times, but it always goes back to the wrong number. I searched this up hoping to find a solution, but apparently this has been an unresolved issue for a very long time. Kinda disappointing that something so simple is left unfixed. Android app + Pixel Watch 3.

Issue persists:
After my last post stating:"Summary: I believe the following will fix the 'edit activity' issue", I went to the pool for my regular swim. I then reviewed the results and tested the edit activity function. The edit function continued to fail. No activity edits would 'stick'
I then called Fitbit Customer Care. I stayed on the call until I was passed through to the supervisor level. I may have said "without resolution of this issue, I will identify every Charge 6 reviewer and influencer that I can locate and direct them to this thread in this fitbit community group"
Supervisor was very helpful and told me she would take personal responsibility to research and resolve this issue. She sent me an email with a case number associated with the escalation.
I will continue to work through for a resolution to this issue. I will post updates to this thread
I like my Charge 6 but this is so frustrating and completely unacceptable.

Thank you for all your efforts, @ChuckSwim! I've marked this as the best answer and hope all users experiencing this issue find this and contact support w/your case number for reference. Maybe then they'll finally fix this. It's so frustrating for all of us.
I've been with Fitbit since 2016 and this is the first time I've experienced a completely unacceptable issue like this for such a long period of time. Like many that have posted/voted here, I have over 4 months of inaccurate exercise activities. It's ridiculous. The Fitbit App is useless.

JSC1967 omg you made me laugh! I read your post to my family we all got quite a laugh! Thank you!
I have been so frustrated with editing the exercises on my charge 5 that no matter what activity I am doing I choose 'weight training' 🤪
You probably figured out how to add/remove exercise choices from your watch already but in case you dont remember..(it uses to be easier!) here it is:
Hey JSC1967
I figured it out!
Synch your watch to your app first - as per ChuckSwim’s advice
Then:
Step 1) Follow ChuckSwim’s advice to delete and re-add your device to the FB App.
Step 2) Go to Devices (like you did per ChuckSwim’s info)
Step 3) Choose your device
Step 4) Scroll down to Exercise Shortcuts
Step 5) Choose Edit
Step 6) check off the exercises (up to 6 on the Charge 5) that you would like to show up on your watch
un-check the ones you do not want
Step 6) VOILÁ 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻 I am so happy!! I no longer have to choose ‘weight training’ because I can’t find pilates!

Issue persists
This evening, I responded to Fitbit support email
Email Attachments
Text of the email follows
Swam today in my normal manner.
Per your instruction,
I opened the Exercise app on my Charge 6
I located and tapped the swim icon.
I tapped the play icon to start the exercise. The phone reported locking in the normal manner
I swim in a 25 yd pool. I swim free style without stopping. Turns are standard flip turns
I swam continuously for 43m 16s and covered 72 laps for 1800 yards
When I completed my swim, I tapped the phone to unlock. I then tapped the 'Finish' icon to complete the exercise.
After my swim I confirmed that my watch setting for GPS was 'Built in' picture attached
I checked the app on my phone and see that the distance was incorrectly tracked at 1175 yards. I attempted to 'edit' the swim to reflect the 1800 yds but the edits would not 'stick' and the data reverted from 1800 to 1175 yds within seconds of my pressing 'save'
Please advise

@ChuckSwim is is kind of annoying that they are making users do all this testing, and blaming users or old devices.
There is clearly a generic app issue around the ability to edit and save activity. The irony being, prior to all these updates, I didn't need to edit activities because the app recorded them correctly!
I maintain that the issue is with the app, exactly as you've described, you try to save data and it reverts to what it previously was in front of your eyes. I don't know why Fitbit won't admit this and stop gaslighting users in this way and making us spend lots of valuable time trying to establish whether we, or our device, is at fault! It's the app!

No response from fitbit support supervisor No response from FB Support Supervisor to my follow up emails. Frustrated:
I posted the following as a one star review of Fitbit on the review section of the Fitbit App:
Your Review
Chuck Shearn
* 1/9/25
Bugs in August 2024 Fitbit App v 4.32 caused
significant failures not yet resolved
Chg 6 swim distance is inaccurately tracked. C6 GPS setting is correct. Before 4.32, I could edit the activity and correct the distance. After V 4.32, Edit feature fails . Edits revert immediately after 'save'. No resolution by fitbit support.

Should be such an easy fix to be able to edit workouts. I remember back in the day (2 years ago) Charge 5 I was able to edit workouts. Some update in 2023 basically ruined it since.

This issue is maddening for me too since last summer. I forget to end the exercise nearly every session, and find out hours later it's still running, which ruins all my metrics. Hopefully you can get somewhere and fix this bug for everyone. Ironically, I found another bug while writing this note - cut didn't actually cut the text, just copied. What a trainwreck.
