my new fitbit hr routinely counts from 500 to 3000 steps less than my sock mounted pedometer. So, why use such an inaccurate step counter?

During what activities?

The Fitbit is on your wrist and detects steps from the normal swinging of your arms while walking.  When your fitbit wrist is held steady, as in holding a hand rail on treadmill or pushing shopping cart, steps might not get detected.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.
