If you’ve noticed that your sleep stages, sleep time and awake time have changed recently, you’re seeing our latest improvement in action. This is the first step in a series of upcoming improvements to improving our sleep tracking — so stay tuned to hear about these changes as soon as they happen.
We understand that changes in your data can be surprising and appreciate your feedback.
What changed?
We've updated our tracking technology. This is to provide a more precise measurement of your sleep stages. Our goal is to always give you the clearest and most accurate view of your health.
For example, you may see your awake time increase slightly as we now capture brief awakenings the old system missed. This is a normal part of sleep.
What this means for you
The sleep data you see now is a more accurate reflection of your night's rest. This more detailed data will help you better understand how your body is recovering each night.
We appreciate you being such an engaged member of our community.
Please note that these changes only rolled out to users of the following devices:
Smartwatches: Versa Lite, Versa 1, Versa 2, Versa 3, Versa 4, Sense 1, Sense 2, Pixel Watch 1, Pixel Watch 2, Pixel Watch 3, and Pixel Watch 4
Trackers: Alta HR, Inspire HR, Inspire 2, Inspire 3, Luxe, Charge 2, Charge 3, Charge 4, Charge 5, and Charge 6

I continue to get poor sleep results --- often showing 1.5 to 2.5 hours of awake time, which is just bogus. I also had more than 5 hours or awake time. Crazy. If it continues, I, too, might consider leaving Fitbit after years of use. It's a shame that they broke something that did not need to be fixed.

How accurate is this new tracking Technology? I have gone from awake around an hour per night to 3! I have changed from sensitive to less sensitive and my awake time went up.I have not had more than 6 hours sleep in more than a month! I think this tracking Technolgy is messed up. Please tell me if this is really correct!

When you say "recently", when was this rolled out please? I noticed that my deep sleep increased significantly since the last week of June 25 - which is either cos I'm chilling out with some time off work or cos your algorithm changed. I'm in the UK. Some more specific info would be helpful, please.

A reasonable question that you'd expect an answer to, however Community leaders @StephanieFitbit @CrisVillaFitbit and @JuanFitbit remain on mute.

Since getting a Google pixel 7 watch, I started using Fitbit and depended on it for tracking all my health information. It's tiles look great on the watch. I can easily swipe to see my heart rate with a graph, steps etc. Since Google acquired it, I had hoped it would get even better. However, since this latest improvement that they hyped. It has not gotten better but worse and unstable. Having to delete multiple overlapping sleep sessions almost daily.
I gave up waiting for a fix or improvement. To adapt I canceled my Fitbit subscription. Found a health tracker database app which imports and exports the data from other Health tracker apps. Using my savings from Fitbit bought a premium subscription for that one. Turned off sleep tracking data right permissions on my phone but left fitbit's read sleep data on. Importing sleep data that is more accurate from another app into Fitbit.
I do love Fitbit and will continue to use it for all my other Health data. As for sleep tracking I'll import the Sleep data from a more reliable sleep tracker into Fitbit. Honestly I love Google use it for almost everything. Got me using Fitbit and Fitbit worked great until whoever decided to improve it.
We adapt. Fitbit subscription money now goes to a health tracker's database app. Which then funnels back into Fitbit sleep data from a more reliable source. Since personally, I still feel Fitbit is the best display option for all that health data since it looks great on my Google watch.

My Fitbit sleep tracking problems started in August 2025. So I just denied Fitbit from handling anything for Sleep. Google owns Fitbit now with its Google Health Connect. So my workaround was turn off Fitbit Sleep Write permissions It's Read permissions still left on, moved up another Sleep app in Health Connect where you can set priorities for each type of health tracking.

You refer to your "savings from Fitbit". I think you are referring to the exported data. One of shortcoming is that heart rate is printed every 2 to 3 seconds, when what you need for better sleep analysis is the time interval between each heart beat (tachogram data); from these intervals, you can get the proper HRV, and so on. By the way, using ChatGPT, I have come up with some models where I input the exported Fitbit data and it could predict the Fitbit sleep stages (the two different Fitbit algorithms that I have mentioned in previous posts).

Hello @StefanieFitbit
Fitbit App - 4.53.1
Pixel Watch 3 - Wear OS 6 firmware with a September 2025 security patch
I have about two years of sleep tracking with both my Fitbit Inspire 3, and then my newish Pixel Watch 3. Prior to that I had Garmins, and It seemed better than the sleep data I had been getting in the Garmin ecosystem.
In April, 2025 I stopped using my Fitbit/Pixel Watch and went back to Garmin for some training features I wanted to try out. And back to getting my sleep data from their ecosystem. I think the Fitbit sleep tracking technology is superior to Garmin's. Not substantially, but a bit better.
Anyway, I heard about the big improvement in sleep tracking Garmin announced, so a couple days ago I pulled out my Pixel Watch and charged it. I wore it all day yesterday and then wore it to sleep. This morning the results seemed fine. It tracked with how it seemed my night went. The sleep score was 85, which is a bit higher than my old Fitbit/Pixel numbers. It isn't possible to compare "sleep score" between Fitbit and Garmin, because sleep score is a made up variable, but the sleep score on my Garmin was consistently lower (50s and 60s)
I'll keep using the Pixel Watch 3 for a week or so, and see how the sleep data looks over time. After one night, it seems fine, nothing outrageous.
