I have had the same problem with my blaze and Iphone 7. And I just fixed it! I went into the settings on the watch and bluetooth was off. So I tapped it and it changed to pair. Then I went into the phone's bluetooth settings and paired it. Next I opened the fitbit app and it asked me to pair with the blaze, again. So I did.
Now, when I open a gps exercise, I then open the app and the blaze connects to the phone's gps.

I have the same problem. Done all that has been suggested and more. Deleted and reinstalled app, repaired device etc. but nothing works. I’m really disillusioned with Fitbit. Having to use Strava which is not acceptable.

iOS I cant help much with.
Android I can.
@ats1075 you have one of, or both of two problems.
Make sure that the app is running in the background before the phones screen times out.
Also through the phones settings disable power management with the Fitbit app.
I also find that restarting the phone, gets the gps connected long before the phone is usable.
@NewSpringer without knowing the phone you are asking about, not sure if I was helpful.
What should I know about using the Fitbit app on my Android phone?
