Sleep stage accuracy

I was really pleased to get the sleep stages update on my blaze but wonder how accurate it is compared to pre-update. Before the update, my average sleep was 4-5 hrs with 1 1/2 hrs awake. Immediately since the update, my sleep is 6-7hrs with 30mins awake. I haven't done anything different and still wake up exhausted!

Does tossing and turning from my partner affect my numbers? Can Fitbit detect the difference between me turning over in the bed from movement I experience because my partner turns over in the bed?

Best Answer

Personally I think it does pick up on a partner's movements. Mine is not on "sensitive" mode but acts like it is! If the bed moves at all, mine seems to detect it and think it's me when it might not be.

I used to really love the sleep tracking on my Fitbit.  I usually slept about 7.5 to 8 hours every night with maybe 2-4 times awake and maybe 15 or 20 minutes restless.  Now with the new system I am only sleeping 5.5 to 6.5 every night with over an hour of awake time.  Believe me that nothing has changed--I don't like the new way of measuring sleep--so much so that I am considering bagging the whole thing.

@cwgolfman I'm totally with you! I feel like I slept great and my fitbit tells me I got barely 7 hours and NO deep sleep. I bought my very first fitbit (the first model!) more for the sleep tracking than anything else and this just really sucks. I wish they would let you turn it off or something. People have said if you manually start and end sleep in  the app it doesn't use the stages, but I'm not taking my phone to bed with me...

I will probably give it a try—sometimes it comes up with the semi old graph and it seems my sleep is ok—no rhyme or reason though—when the new graph with the different stages it goes back to about 3/4 of the actual sleep.

I am having the same problem.  I have been an insomniac for 30 years and rarely slept more than 4-5 hours a night.  However I have always stayed in bed with my eyes closed as I was resting but aware of everything around me.  Since wearing the tracker it states that I am getting over 7 hrs a night, just because I am lying still in bed - although I would love to be sleeping that long, I know I have been awake for hours and still get up feeling tired.

Yeah let's all do that. I have the same problemo. Sleep stages really sucks big time. Since the update I'm awake more than 60 minutes a night although I sleep like a bear in wintersleep. Very disappointed by this software. Fake science. I looks marvelous, but it feels unreliable. Commercially Pretty risky for fitbit not to update it...

i prefer the sensitivity mode, liked thinking i got some level of decent sleep, Ii fully believed the R.E.M. and deep sleep traces were correct- it was debatable as to whether the light sleep was really sleep since i was sometimes just lying there still-like.   This simple mode (which apparently has taken over) is crap.  would rather be able to shut it off completely.

FitBit team- if you are reading these blogs, please bring back the sensitivity algorithm - i liked the data it provided me and miss it greatly!

I've contacted customer support and written an email. no resolution in sight. wondering if there is something going on at a corporate level. please bring back sensitive trace mode.

My Blaze sleep function only really starts recording at 3:00 am although I know I have slept before then. What’s happening??

Hey there @0052! I would like you to restart your Blaze and double check your wristband isn't loose in your wrist, so it can properly track your sleep. Also, you can change the setting to sensitive because the sensitive setting will cause your device to record nearly all movements as time spent restless or awake.

Additionally, you can learn more about What should I know about sleep stages?

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I just recently bought my Blaze and have been tracking my sleep and my sleep pattern. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea several years ago and sleep with a CPAP machine and mask every night. I was amazed at the Blaze and the accuracy that it shows on my sleep patterns. I'm very aware of when I wake and look at the clock and the Blaze sees it too. I really find it very interesting that it can show me my deep sleep and REM sleep patterns. I know they are fairly accurate as I am aware of my dreams and know they coincide with my REM sleep pattern. Great device and very informative.
