I am doing a mud race and there are sections with water. I was thinking of putting my blaze in a ziplock bag in my pocket to count steps but im not sure if it would work!

Yes it will, the heat rate has nothing to do with the step counting, it is used for measuring your heart rate, and hello determine caloric burn. Your resting heart rate will also give you an idea of the improvement in health. Hint: it will go down as your heart gets stronger and more efficient.
If you want there is the option through settings to turn the HR function off, it will then function as a glorified Charge.

@ClareioWelcome... Go for it.. The HR function gives you the extra calories when you are above your Fat Burning Zone. So you can turn that off within the Blaze in Settings.
I'm currently experimenting with the Blaze in my pocket and it is within 4 steps against my One over 1800 steps and 2300.. 7 steps.
Test it first, and keep it dry because the Blaze is only splashproof and you have the small hole in the side you don't wont to block because that is where the air pressure inlet for the Altimeter.
