The Fitbit app for Android doesn't appear to use "Start Sleep Now" for anything useful except telling the user how long they've been in bed since telling the app they were sleeping. After I let the app do its sleep analysis, it frequently comes up with an amount of sleep that is at least an hour shorter, and often several hours shorter than my actual sleep.
I can understand that my wristband doesn't count it as sleep until it's been still for an hour, but it would be tremendously more accurate and useful if it just trusted that I went to bed when I say I do, and then recorded my restlessness as I slept, as it normally does. If I'm "restless" while sleeping every 45 minutes but it only takes me 15 minutes to fall asleep, this eliminates this accuracy.
Edited to add these screenshots:
I note especially that last night, I went to sleep around 12:30 AM, and it certainly didn't take until 1:47 for me to fall asleep. It was probably closer to 10-15 minutes at most. Note many "awake" moments throughout the night indicate that small movements likely disrupt the onset of "sleep" according to my tracker. The discrepancy between 7:14 (my normal wakeup time) and the time I turned off the sleep tracker in the app is because I went back to sleep on a Sunday morning.
This really shouldn't be hard, that the app can set definitive times between "go to sleep" and "wake up", and then use the tracker to record periods of restlessness and what likely counts as sleep or not. It's a bit like going back and editing these times in the app. In fact, if I edit it, I get this:
And we see that it took me about 15-20 minutes to fall asleep, and there were periods of wakefulness after 7:15 AM and other periods of sleep.
At the very least, the app could go back and automatically edit the start and stop times when you press "I'm awake".
