How to get the Weather app to sync?

Ok, I have tried everything, short of totally "burning down the house" -- doing a factory reset with the Ionic, deleting it from my Fitbit account, uninstalling every instance of the Fitbit software, and then hoping that it might magically make the Weather app work if I start everything from scratch.  I have tried everything short of that, and it simply, utterly will not work when I try to input a city name, and it will not work with my phone's current location.  My Weather app is as dead as a piece of software can be dead.

So, does anyone have it working properly?  I would like to know if it actually works halfway well, before I destroy everything else that I've got working.  And could you also describe how it works?  I have the following questions:

How and when does it sync?  I presume it syncs with your phone, and presumably via Bluetooth.  Is that correct, or might it only sync with whatever Wi-Fi connection you used to set the Ionic up with, to begin with?  And if it does sync via Bluetooth on your phone, how often does it sync?  Is the frequency something you can set?

Mainly, I'm wondering if you can pop into the Weather app, and halfway reliably see what the local temperature is outdoors.  If it only syncs once per hour or less frequent, then I'm not so sure it would be worth the effort.

And so on.  Thanks in advance for letting me know how it works, because I really dread going through the factory reset routine, because I went through a nightmare to get my Ionic set up to begin with.  I really don't want to go through that, if it's not likely to work, or if the app is actually quite lame, and not worth the effort to begin with.

Thanks again!

Ionic does not have to be connected to power to be able to join wifi.

In the settings menu under About you see it connected to the wifi network with valid IP address? Can you sync music?

On your phone you went into the weather app menu settings of the Fitbit app and selected at least one location there and then synced with the ionic? I assume you have the latest ionic software - 27.25.16.7 is what I currently have.

OK, I just tried, tried again.  I absolutely confirmed the Ionic was connected to Wi-Fi, then tried to input a city in the settings -- it remains dead.  The app simply, utterly is dead, useless, non-functioning.

So, back to my questions:  How does it sync -- via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi?  And how often?  And can you specify how often it syncs?  Thanks again for any help you can give me.

Mine is working fine..it even updated my location to a new city on its own..

This just crossed with my last message -- you bet, I was definitely connected to Wi-Fi.

Yes, I have 27.25.16.7.

When I go into the Fitbit app on my phone, then into the settings for the Weather app, I can type something into the blank, but that's the problem -- nothing ever happens.  There is no way to "select" anything, since nothing ever shows up.  I presume that once you type something in, it is supposed to provide a list of cities to choose from, and then off you go.  I never get anything -- the app is "dead."  At this point, I'm very sure that I have tried absolutely everything (including all of the GPS things people have mentioned), and it just never, ever works.  So, the only recourse is to blow everything away, reset the Ionic back to factory conditions, remove the Ionic from my Fitbit account, uninstall every Fitbit app from every device, and start everything over from scratch.  With really no confidence that anything will be any different.

Meanwhile, everything else seems to work just fine.  And I had a complete nightmare getting the update to install, when I first set the thing up, so I'm quite hesitant to go through all of that again.

Thus, I'm wondering if the Weather app simply updates via Bluetooth from your phone, and how often it does that.  All I really want to do is to be able to look at my watch and see what the temperature outside is at any given time.

The weather app works for me although on two occasions I've had to restart my phone when I had the message saying I needed to sync the Fitbit. Once I'd restarted my iPhone all was well.

I had the same exact experience.  I read one of the fix in this forum and did exactly the same.  I stepped out of my place and set the exercise to run.  I waited until the gps connected and walked for a bit.  When I went back inside the house and looked at the weather app (after 5 mins) then it automatically picked up the city from my location and had the weather info there.  I hope it helps.

I've had more bad situations with the weather app than good.  I surely don't want to have to restart my phone every time I want the weather to appear on the watch.  I'd be better off checking my phone for the weather.  Hopefully this gets fixed quick.

Oh, I wish.  I've tried that -- as usual, at least half a dozen times at this point.  Definitely got the GPS to connect, but no dice on the Weather app.  I first tried just watching it connect, walked around a bit, and then stopped the exercise session, and went into the house and tried the Weather app.  Nothing.  Then I tried leaving the exercise session open, made sure the GPS was still connected, and tried again.  Nothing.  I truly have tried everything short of blowing everything away and starting from scratch.

But, let me pick your brain:  Did you leave your Ionic connected via Bluetooth as you did this?  Or did you turn it off (that's another suggestion, make sure they're not connected while you're out playing with the GPS), and then turn it on when you got in the house?  And/or, did you connect your Ionic to your Wi-Fi connection when you got back in, or was it just connected to Bluetooth?  I presume it has to at least be connected via Bluetooth, or you would never get the app to work with the Ionic.  And so on.

And still, how often does the Weather app sync with the phone?  I really want to know that more than anything else -- if it's only once per hour or less often than that, I'm not sure it's worth blasting everything away, because what I really want to see is what the current outside temperature is.  If it doesn't update very often, it just might not be very useful for that purpose.  Thanks!

@SunsetRunner,

What OS is your phone? Your descriptions match the behavior I'm seeing. I've got a Window's phone and am wondering if that isn't the root cause of my troubles.

Good guess, but nope -- a brand-new Samsung Galaxy Note 8.  Very Android.  Though, I'm wondering about "Windows" -- I did the initial setup with a Windows 10 notebook, and then moved over and connected it to my phone.  Trust me, if I blow everything away and start over from scratch again, I'll try to do it all with just the phone, and avoid Windows at all costs.

I connected it first to the wifi (before i left the apartment for a walk) and tried to go to weather app to try the settings again to no avail.  I gave up and went for a walk (walk exercise with gps on). When I came back and checked the weather app (on the ionic), it was updated to my location.  Bluetooth was connected ( as default).  Btw, I have Windows 10 Mobile 950XL.

From a Fitbit app dashboard, tap or click the Account icon (gray’d index card)
Tap or click Wi-Fi Settings
Tap or click Add Network and follow the on-screen instructions to connect to your Wi-Fi network.

For best results, use your home or work Wi-Fi network.

note: Wi-Fi won’t work on Ionic when the battery is below approximately 25%.

Ionic uses Wi-Fi to download playlists and apps from the Fitbit App Gallery, and for faster firmware
updates.
Ionic can connect to open, WEP, WPA personal, and WPA2 personal Wi-Fi networks.
Your watch won’t connect to 5GHz, WPA enterprise, or public Wi-Fi networks that require logins, subscriptions, or profiles.
If you see fields for a username or domain when connecting to the Wi-Fi network on a computer, the network isn’t supported.

For more information about how to connect Ionic to Wi-Fi, see HERE

The Fitbit app uses Bluetooth Low Energy technology to sync data with Ionic and to update apps installed on your watch.  Each time you open the Fitbit app, Ionic syncs automatically when it’s nearby. Ionic also syncs with the app every 15 minutes if All-Day Sync is on. To turn on this feature:
From the Fitbit app dashboard, tap or click the Account icon (gray’d index card)
 > Ionic pic > All Day Sync

As long as you are getting notifications (your mobile is in range) your weather app is being updated.  The current information doesn't go away when you are out of range it just doesn't update until you are in range.  The Weather App screen clearly indicates the last time it was updated.

@Rhoyz& @SunsetRunner,

Thanks for the data point. Mine is a just plain Windows 10 mobile 950. I didn't try the walk method. I've been unsuccessful in setup the Starbucks application also. I grabbed my daughter's phone which is a Samsung with Android and installed the fitbit app. On the Android version of the application I was able to set the city for the weather app and also set the Starbucks card number. I didn't need WiFi enabled to accomplish this. I'm "pronouncing" the Fitbit Windows PC and Fitbit Windows Phone application as deficient from what I can tell.

Yes, yes, yes, to all of the Wi-Fi stuff -- been there, done that, a number of times.  Though, the bit about "getting notifications" and the Weather app getting updated is the info I'm looking for.  Looks like it would get updated quite often, which is what I'm looking for.  Thanks!  But now if only I could get it to work....

Thanks for this info.  I don't think I've done it in quite that sequence.  I've done all of that before, but again, not quite in that sequence.  I'll give that a shot tomorrow.  Thanks!

Thanks for your info.  I tend to agree with you -- Windows 10 might be at least part of the problem.  Most certainly, if I reset the thing back to the factory condition, I'll stay far away from Windows.

@wmchapman don't take this the wrong way.... then why does your screenshot show an update 19m minutes ago? I've got an original Apple Watch (AW0), the 'really slow' one haha, and mine usually (80% of time) updates within seconds of raising my wrist including when I get in the car and drive an hour or two or four - while driving or at destination it updates both location, and weather for that location. And about 19% of the time it doesn't update within a few seconds, but does within 15-20 seconds (the other 1% takes about a minute or two). Honestly looking to understand as I plan on replacing my AW0 in a couple months and this is one of the features I frequently use and enjoy.

Oh, I wish.  There is no option to uninstall it, or re-install it.  It just says "Installed."  Yep, I expect that might well fix it, but it appears that the only way to do that is to do a full factory reset.
