How to get the Weather app to sync?

Ok, I have tried everything, short of totally "burning down the house" -- doing a factory reset with the Ionic, deleting it from my Fitbit account, uninstalling every instance of the Fitbit software, and then hoping that it might magically make the Weather app work if I start everything from scratch.  I have tried everything short of that, and it simply, utterly will not work when I try to input a city name, and it will not work with my phone's current location.  My Weather app is as dead as a piece of software can be dead.

So, does anyone have it working properly?  I would like to know if it actually works halfway well, before I destroy everything else that I've got working.  And could you also describe how it works?  I have the following questions:

How and when does it sync?  I presume it syncs with your phone, and presumably via Bluetooth.  Is that correct, or might it only sync with whatever Wi-Fi connection you used to set the Ionic up with, to begin with?  And if it does sync via Bluetooth on your phone, how often does it sync?  Is the frequency something you can set?

Mainly, I'm wondering if you can pop into the Weather app, and halfway reliably see what the local temperature is outdoors.  If it only syncs once per hour or less frequent, then I'm not so sure it would be worth the effort.

And so on.  Thanks in advance for letting me know how it works, because I really dread going through the factory reset routine, because I went through a nightmare to get my Ionic set up to begin with.  I really don't want to go through that, if it's not likely to work, or if the app is actually quite lame, and not worth the effort to begin with.

Thanks again!

I did notice that my entered city disappeared, but I was able to add it again. I see you're on iOS. Do you have an Android or Win10 device you can try? I'm on Android.

And I presume we're talking about the watch update, not an app update? Because if it's the latter, you may just have to wait for the former.

Yea it was the watch update. I can try it on my laptop when I get home later and see if it’ll work with that 🤷‍:female_sign:

I got tired of all the bugs and got rid of the ionic. I wanted something that worked as smartwatch and not just a step counter tied to buggy software and a phone.

Oh wait! Got it to work! Actually logged out of the app on my phone, then logged back in and now it works. Weird. Thanks for all the responses though 😄

I switched to the YWeather clock face. It uses Yahoo weather I think and displays all the time on the clock face. Only drawback is that the time displayed is in the 24 hour mode.

When I edit the City list on the phone it always updates the app on the Ionic at that time, however it never subsequently updates the forecast and after a day reverts to -- for the temp.

Editing the City list resyncs the weather again and I am good for another day.  Hope this helps tech support.

PS I am running the Windows Phone 10 client and it has always done this since day 1.

Logging out and back on the app also corrects it but just for one cycle (and it turns off notifications).

I have experienced the exact same thing as many, many users on this thread have detailed:

  • First got the Ionic in Nov 2017 and Weather worked fine.
  • After second firmware update, it just stopped working a couple days later
  • Could never Uninstall, no option available
  • Never tried a full factory reset (firmware update too painful for just one app)
  • I have an iPhone 6 and latest (to date) firmware 32.4.19
  1. First time in months I got it to work:
    1. Once connected to wifi in the Ionic (using the iPhone app)
    2. It shows the correct city as usual, but only two dashes for weather and says to Sync in Fitbit...etc.
    3. Forced closed Fitbit app in iPhone.
    4. Hard restart on iPhone.
    5. Restarted iPhone and reopened Fitbit app to sync (all while Weather open in Ionic).
    6. Now shows Current Location city weather perfectly!
    7. Still couldn't get another city, however. Search in iPhone Fitbit app and despite typing any number of cities, nothing ends up showing (as many have also seen).
    8. Using advice from another user, I went into All Apps on the Fitbit iPhone app (instead of My Apps like I always do), scrolled and tapped "View All" at the bottom to list all of the apps in the store.
    9. Clicked on Weather and again searched for my city and ta-dah it showed!
    10. Now I have Current Location and my hometown working fine.
    11. We'll see how long it lasts (it's been ~10min). 😛

Hope that helps some of you, cheers!

The Weather app was not working for me either. Went to the Settings on my iPhone and then Fitbit and set up Locations to "Always" instead of "While using the App". That fixed the problem. Now the app can find cities and the watch shows the weather.

Thank you,

Ed

This weather app SUCKS!!!  Mine won't let me put in my 3 towns. It says one town in app but different Town on watch 😒  and there's no way to delete it.

Try with the app open syncing to your watch. Leave the app on always. That seems to help..

Thanks,

The Weather app worked great when I installed it but was dead as a doornailnthe last few months.

I figured out the fix by reading these threads. Make sure your WiFi and location services are turned on for FitBit in your privacy settings. Then just log out of the Fitbit app and log in again and voila - the Weather app works again!

How do I sync  The Fitbit mobile app to update

Here’s what I do, but shouldn’t have to do because it should be automatic.

I hold simultaneously hold down the back, up, and down buttons. The screen will go blank then redisplay the clock face then go blank again. I wait awhile then push the back button. The original display with the wrong temp will display. Check back about 5 minutes later and the display will show current temp.

I do this when indoors using wifi. It should work outdoors too but I haven’t had the time to monkey around with the watch when I’ve been outdoors.

I can verify that his is working. I just logged out of the app, exited the app, launched the app, logged in, and then I was able to put in a city for Weather on the fitbit weather settings.

Thanks!

I used Yweather for awhile myself.  I couldn't stand being in public with a watch that displayed the time in 24 hour format.  I posted this to forum and the moderator told me to contact the developer.  Many, if not all developers, have their email address under the name in their app.  But not this developer.  His name is: David Rodriguez Rincon.

Does anyone in Fitbit know what his email address is???  Maybe they can contact him and have him correct his code to allow an option to display time in 12 hour format.  It's frustrating!!

I switched to Forecast Weather by Chris Spooner because of the 24 hour time. This one is in 12 hour time and provides the temperature and current conditions as well as a battery icon on the main screen. Also, on a subsequent screen it gives you a three day weather forecast as well as usual stats.

I can't agree more. Everything on the Ionic is impossible to setup and not at all intuitive. I can only think they have grads designing these apps that have no experience. You are completely right, how does the app work? Why doesn't Fitbit say? Does it use Wifi, does it need Bluetooth? All these things we need to know so we can work around their inefficient and badly designed app.

Like you I cant get the weather app to work despite several hours spent on it. I finally get the 'settings' Icon to show on the weather app on Windows 10 but it won't accept any location I use, even putting in London it doesnt recognise it. This was certainly released without testing and without even basic testing. Then we pay £300 quid to help them find all the bugs!!

After my previous Surge this is just a really bad experience. I should have gone to Garmin!

My understanding is the wifi only connects when transferring  music and does not need to be on all the time. Is that correct? I have reset everything several times.? I can connect my wifi but then it disconnects. I cannot update my weather even when wifi is connected. I am beginning to think they do not have the bugs worked out on this watch and for the cost I expect them too, Seriously considering returning it.

@emb157 Welcome to the Fitbit Community! Thanks for sharing the experience you have had with your watch and the weather.

You need Wi-Fi to download music playlists and apps from the Fitbit App Gallery, and for faster firmware updates. You also need Wi-Fi or mobile data to sync your watch. If you are having difficulties to connect your watch to Wi-Fi please check this help article for some solutions.

For the weather to appear and keep updating you also need to have location services (GPS) enabled on your phone. If you change locations, sync your watch to see your new location in the Weather app. For more details, check this article here

Hope this helps. Keep me posted! Smiley Happy
