Hi Fitbit,

May I just voice my disappointment with the fact that you make Sleeping Heart Rate and Restlessness a paid feature now! This is a gross business practice. What's next, I'll have to pay to track activities or access my daily heart rate logs? Fair enough that the access to extra features such as workouts is extra, but sleep tracking is standard feature of Fitbit. Outrageous.

Dear fitbit I am considering buying a Versa 2 but am confused about what sleep data is free and what is premium. (I have read this thread, reviews and your faq on this but remain confused, sorry.)

Do you get total time in each sleep stage (deep, light and awake) for each night for free? (The tech radar review says you only get the score for free, not the underlying times.) Thanks

I am confused because of the tech radar review and the comments on this thread. If you get the raw data, including moments of waking during the night, then that is adequate for me.

I agree! When I bought the Alta Hr it said that sleep analysis was included. It only stopped working a week ago. Very disappointed with advertisements

Hi everyone! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for the feedback provided. I apologize for the delayed response

I want to ask every member posting here to do it on a respectful way, without insults and grievances! Please keep in mind that the Community is here to have a save place to search and offer information and help.

Please allow me to explain some things as it seems that some posts have confused a lot of members.

The sleep analysis, (sleep stages, and sleep score, for those Fitbits that can track them) have been shown and still be shown on you accounts as usual for free accounts, as well as the time spent on each sleep stage . You'll still receive insights about sleep based on a demographic, people with the same age, height, gender, etc. No feature have been removed from the non Premium accounts and moved to Premium. Non Premium users will have access to the same features offered to any Fitbit Family member.

Premium members will receive this information too, with the difference, that their analysis will have enhanced information, and the insights will be personalized according to the data recorded, so that members will have a better overview, tips and information of their data.

For more information about the Premium subscription I'll advice you again to have a look at this article:

What should I know about Fitbit Premium?

Let me assure that moderators are not bots.

@Histrocrete , thanks for sharing your situation here. I really appreciate this.  Your Alta will record our sleep and will show you how long you have been sleeping, awake or restless, all this can be seen on a free account.

As Alta cannot read your heart rate it will not show your your sleep stages. For that you'll need a Fitbit that can track heart rate. E.j. Alta HR, any of the Versa Family , the Ionic.

@apinkard thank you for your information. I suggest you to have a look at this thread I found about the sleep stages not been recorded.Device not tracking sleep.

I'm sorry Juan bit your information is wrong in reference to your comment "No feature have been removed from the non Premium accounts and moved to Premium."

As the original poster pointed out, we had access to items such as "sleeping heart rate" previously, which is now hidden behind a premium pay wall. So we definitely don't have access to the same features for free. I made comment to this back back in August (pg 2 of this thread) and September (pg 3). I know we did BECAUSE I HAVE SEEN (and used) THEM!  Those links that now have little PREMIUM locks beside them on the daily sleep analysis page used to work for Non Premium. I have used them.

Go back to Braggowska's very first comment. Were those features free before? YES. Are they available for Non-Premium now? NO. How can you say "No feature have been removed from the non Premium accounts and moved to Premium"?

We just seem to be going around in circles on this. You tell us that nothing has been moved to premium, and then we tell you that we know it has because we used those features (specifically the links that now have locks beside them). It's just a fact.  It is not subjective. We used these features and now they are not available - it doesn't get simpler than this. This was the point of the original post.

That's disappointing - I thought you'd get the raw data for free, and premium would be for anything extra - analysis, recommendations, maybe even aggregations, etc, but not the raw data. Is there a way to get a historical continuous chart or table of heart rate data? Is it just the averaging of your sleep heart rate that's missing? Could an app suck up the raw data? Can't see the commercial strategy behind hiding a heart beat. If not, any chance you could submit this as a feature request Juan?

My husband had a Fitbit prior to these new changes and somehow the app was lost off his phone and now I can't read his sleep patterns without paying for it

Frustrated and disappointed customer

Hi everyone, thank you for your replies and comments.

@G-Man_505 , thank you for you comment and feedback! I apologize for the confusion. As stated before, all the features for non premium users are still available and haven't been removed to Premium.

Specific the sleeping heart rate, wenn released on the app, it was always thought to be a Premium feature. It was released to everyone as a preview of the features offered in Premium, so that everyone can have a look what they could see when using Premium.

@1Chris , thank you for your questions. Most of the mentioned data you request, can be downloaded with the Wellness Report

@Lbagnell , thank you for your comment. The Sleep stages are still available for those users, that have a Fitbit device, that records heart rate and sleep. This feature is still available to non Premium users.

If your husband does not see the sleep stages, and has a tracker or watch that records heart rate and sleep, please refer to the dedicated board of his device and search for threads that discuss that issue. You might find some information and tips for your situation.

Let me know if you have further questions .

Hi @JuanFitbit , about a month ago (12 December '19) you indicated I would be hearing from Fitbit Support regards failed watch strap;
@truthinbeer , thank you for your comment. I took the liberty and contacted Support in your behalf regarding the broken strap. Please keep an eye on your inbox. Support will be contacting you via email very soon.
I haven't received any contact from Support.

I find this to be absolutely absurd I cannot stand the fact that I've had a Fitbit for years I have bought and three different versions and now they have the audacity to want to start charging you money in order to see sleep features this is absolute pure BS and I will be buying a different Fitness device from this point on you are losing a customer that has bought herself and her husband new Fitbit every year since 2015

Best Answer

There are 2 sleep stages that are not available that were before you locked them down.   Sleeping heart rate and restlessness.  Why did you lock us out of those two?

It disappeared for two weeks. I have had different Fitbit’s for five years. I forgot the device on my phone and reinstalled and solved the problem

Let me get this straight: so I've been wearing a large ionic watch for 2 years waiting for the unused sensor issue to be figured out. I finally switch to the Charge3 so I can wear something smaller to work, only to learn that the app won't support both, and now you're telling us that you finally got the sensor we paid for working but now we have to pay for the data generated by it? My husband's Apple Watch provides that information for free.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Wellness Report is Premium only, so an additional $8 per month, and this forum is about trying to get data that was free when we purchased, i.e., heart rate and restlessness. Seems wrong to offer something, people buy it, then you charge them again for what they were informed would be included when they decided to purchase.

I bought my fitbit to help with insomnia, I have absolutely no interest in tracking my exercise at all, so while removing this data probably doesn't bother the "average customer" you have in mind when deciding policy, it removes 50% of the value of the watch for me, as I now only have your sleep stage charts, which often mis-categorize awake time as asleep time (around 15% of each night).

Would it hypothetically be possible to write an app that just grabs the raw data into a text file?

I'm guessing there won't be any changes to charging policy while Google take over. Hopefully then fitbit will be a bit more open at least with the raw data.

Hey everyone.

Thanks for continuing participating in the forums.

I would encourage you to continue checking this Fitbit Premium Guide

You have to pay for your restlessness and sleeping heart rate

I was just about to purchase the Versa 2 online and now i'm unsure if I want to bother. I already have the Garmin VivoSmart watch that allows me to see all my stats for FREE.

Adding a subscription cost ontop of an already expensive device is insane.

The sleep recording and stats all show for free on my Garmin so expecting its customers to pay an additional 100+ yearly ontop is messed up.
