Hip Hurts

I've been running/walking 4-5 miles, 4-5 times a week and lately my right hip has been hurting.  Like a nerve..not really sure.  I haven't ran since Sunday, hoping for the inflammation if any to go down.  Any thoughts?  I think that it may have to do with having a leg shorter than the other..really not sure, but I have doctors..what can I say...

I've hurt myself in a few places since I started working out last year. Does it only hurt when you walk now? Or does it also irritate you even when you're sitting? Whatever the problem, I would take it super easy for a few days until it goes away, and then when you start running again maybe start off with fewer miles than you normally do.

If it gets worse though or doesn't go away I'd definitely go see a doctor.

Exercise related injuries are a sign that you are over stressing your body too quickly and not giving it enough time to heal between hard workouts.  I had a similar issue when I started running, I got slight shin splints in my left shin so as I continued to run I subconsciously made my impact on the left foot lighter and transferred a stronger impact to my right foot.  Well after a week or so my tendons on the top of my right foot became overworked and would tense up causing pretty bad pain.  I had to take about 3 days off from running and slowly get back into it.

Remember, a healthier lifestyle is not a sprint, its a marathon.  No one who is overweight (myself included) got that way overnight.  It will take a while to lose it all and get back to a truly healthy weight/lifestyle.  Best of luck.

Do you see a chiropractor?

I have one leg shorter then another and it's do to my poster. over time of course.

Could be sore for a bunch of reasons - as always its best to go see an expert before trying to treat it yourself.

I've found as I get older I have to stretch and foam roll my legs religiously, otherwise I get various niggling aches, pains and twinges.  My IT bands in particular get incredibly tight if I neglect them, leading to some pains in my hips.  I've also found barre exercises incredibly helpful at keeping my legs loose and pain free (of course, being male I take one-on-one barre classes rather than be seen doing it in public!).

I'm fortunate and workout with a really good personal trainer..... he is incredibly good at spotting 'problem areas'.  It never fails to amaze me how rolling my left leg loosens up a tight right shoulder......when rolling my shouler/lats made no difference.

It hurst when I walk sometimes (Depends on how I walk) and also when I sit.  It's weird because it doesn't hurt all of the time.  Yesterday I put a heat pad and for some reason today I am hurting a little bit more. I put on a call to make an appointment to have an acupunture session.  Let's see how it goes.

@gerrymcd I need to buy a roller. I've heard it hurts but in a good way.

Yeah, unfortunately it was kinda painful at first.  So you should start with a fairly fliable roller - not too soft though - and make sure you support your weight on your hands and 'free leg'.  Over time I've worked up my tolerance until I can use things like a black rumble roller on my lower legs.   I'm also a big fan of triggerpoint rollers, but they are a bit pricey.

The rumble roller - can still bring tears to my eyes, but so worth the pain.

It could be sciatica or hip bursitis (I have been dealing with both for a couple of years), and they are both quite painful.  Sciatica feels like it goes from the center of your glutes and down your legs...it's like a burning sensation that can be very pronounced. Hip bursitis feels like a sharp pain in the front hip/leg joint and in the hip/leg joint on your right or left side. And, when you touch that area is feels like a bruise.  Stretching helps a lot.

Going with Cybertekkno with the sciatica or bursitis possibility. I have bursitis in my left hip (my right leg is slightly shorter) and it's a sharp pain when my left heal hits the ground and I roll forward on the left foot. It hurts if I've been sitting still too long, too.

For either, yoga and a foam roller are a big help. There are some decent videos on you tube for using the roller.

Mine started hurting too when I increased to about 14K/day. It's on the outside (anterior) side so I believe it's bursitis. I think it will take a long time to heal unless all activites are stopped (which I don't plan to do). In the meantime, I ice, stretch and take anti-inflammatory when it's particularly painful.

If your pain is on the inside it could be something mechanical and best to see a doc.

Hi @KatySaky! I hope you are feeling better now. I think it would be best if you consult with a doctor, it does seem that there might be a nerve involved in the pain you are feeling.

I wish you the best! Robot wink

@KatySaky Is your hip better now? It might a good idea decreasing the intensity of your runs while your body get used to the exercise. Smiley Very Happy
