How do you get those extra steps in?

I live about four miles from my workplace and although I haven't yet walked all four miles to or from work, there are a few games I play during the week to increase my stepcount.

Some days I'll take the hillier, windier, unnecessarily long route to BART (San Francisco's heavy-rail rapid transit system). Almost always, I forgo the escalator for the stairs. Today, that act alone added 5 flights of stairs and over 250 steps to my morning journey.

My other favorite "cheat" is high stepping in place. Sure, I may look a little odd bouncing up and down while typing at my makeshift standing desk, but it feels good to keep the blood flowing and the legs moving!

I walk during lunch breaks and take the stairs as often as I can. It's hard when working 9-5 kind of job but I manage to get in almost 9,000-10,000 on a daily basis. I feel more accomplished when I have met all of my goals before I'm home Smiley Tongue

Every step taken counts. When I am sitting watching TV I get my one lb hand weights and do chair aerobic😊

I do a 3km walk around the area where my partner works since we finish at different times and if I have a few (or a few hundred) steps to do to make my quota before bed, I walk around the house with 8kg kettlebells in each hand (may as well work the shoulders while I'm at it).

This also works when waiting for a cup of tea to brew.

The common, but effective, parking at the far end of the carpark when shopping is a technique I use.

Pacing back and forth in my office while on a conference call puts a dent in.

I achieve 10k steps while being at work, so I strive for 15-20k steps. I do this by walking in my apartment. I either put some music or a TV show on. It's amazing how long you can walk by putting something enjoyable on. 🙂 Sometimes I'll do some walking in place along with kicks, knee lifts and side steps just to mix things up. I'd say on average I hardly ever get less than 5k steps.

You are right--but don't leave home without your Fitbit--It is as important as your cell phone. Again--I am so happy with my Fitbit. If eat junk food--I increase my steps, but I don't do it often.

How can someone who has just started, only 146 steps judge someone? Friended me, sent me a message saying 46000 how is that possible, then unfriended me

Starting to get old and frankly getting sick of it

My message is this, if you don't like it, tough, I don't give the monkeys anymore

Stop making excuses why you can't and get off your backside, all that time spent sat on your backside watching tv, stood still, laid in bed etc, you could be out walking, jogging, jogging on the spot etc

My mum is 65 this year, has breast cancer and she does 10k without any trouble, so if she can do it with all the house work etc, you have no excuse

Work all day? So does my younger sis, and she does 20k jogging no probs, whilst also doing house work, cooking, cleaning etc

No wonder kids/people are fatter, more unhealthy than before, because all they do is spend most of their time in front of the tv, computer or console

How do I know? Because I used to be one of them, my niece is one of them, all she does is sit all day playing on her ipad and eat, and guess what? She is not even in her teens and is already classed as obese

When I used to work in an office building, I used to get water in the smallest cup possible, and I make 20 trips to refill water daily:)

I also parked as far as I could. There are so many benefits for doing this:)

Have you tried to put the tracker on the dog instead? I bet those short legs can rack up serious steppage!

Just tried this tip yesterday. I was so surprised how little time it took to get in my extra steps to meet my goal! My husband looked at me like I was out of my mind - but before I knew it, he was up getting his extra steps too!

When the weathers bad or just plain cold, I walk in our Family room, I do many "laps" around! I have walked 5 miles or more inside my house, what ever it takes! I usually listen to music or have the tv on while I do my "laps". If my husband is home (sitting on the couch) we talk about things that might not get discussed otherwise while I get my steps in.

Spending the day mulching trees & flower beds seems to be a good way to get some extra steps in. My tracker registered 13,622 steps today for all the garden work... Smiley Happy
