I live about four miles from my workplace and although I haven't yet walked all four miles to or from work, there are a few games I play during the week to increase my stepcount.
Some days I'll take the hillier, windier, unnecessarily long route to BART (San Francisco's heavy-rail rapid transit system). Almost always, I forgo the escalator for the stairs. Today, that act alone added 5 flights of stairs and over 250 steps to my morning journey.
My other favorite "cheat" is high stepping in place. Sure, I may look a little odd bouncing up and down while typing at my makeshift standing desk, but it feels good to keep the blood flowing and the legs moving!
What do you do to get your extra steps in?

It was hard getting my steps in today due to constant rain & thunderstorms. Actually, the rain didn't bother me very much, but the lightning did. But, the rain finally ended by late afternoon, so I went out for a walk. I did manage to get my 5 miles in, but I did get wet for the last 3/4 mile or so, after the rain started again. Actually, it was kind of nice walking the last part in the light rain - it cooled things off. 12,269 steps and 5.23 miles - not a bad day...
Didn't see any wildlife on the walk, but I did see these...
I have to write you to say your post is awesome. I like how you find ways in everyday life to get that extra step and simple workouts through anyway possible.
I do what I call a "workout at work", In my store I do do all the stock of bags of dog and cat food ranging in weight from 2 to 44lbs. I work my arms by doing curls with the lighter bags and squats with the heavier bags. And the occassional lunge i throw in for good leg worout.
Many folks don't realize that using everyday objects a phone book, a chair, a wall, your cat litter (even the cat if very friendly), a sac of potatos can all be used as exercise equipment. I really wanted to congratulate you not letting anything stop you from getting your steps in. Well done and keep moving!
We have "cluster" mailboxes at the end of our street, and everyone stops their car on the way home from work to get the mail. I used to do it to. Now I drive to my house and go walk to get the mail. If it's nice out, I'll go the long way around the block to get it. Little things like that can add up. Usually we're thinking of ways to be more efficient, so it can take a little change in thinking. I used to take pride in being able to get all the grocery bags in one trip, but now I always take more than one trip, even if I could easily carry them all.
