I live about four miles from my workplace and although I haven't yet walked all four miles to or from work, there are a few games I play during the week to increase my stepcount.
Some days I'll take the hillier, windier, unnecessarily long route to BART (San Francisco's heavy-rail rapid transit system). Almost always, I forgo the escalator for the stairs. Today, that act alone added 5 flights of stairs and over 250 steps to my morning journey.
My other favorite "cheat" is high stepping in place. Sure, I may look a little odd bouncing up and down while typing at my makeshift standing desk, but it feels good to keep the blood flowing and the legs moving!
What do you do to get your extra steps in?

I have one of these at the end of my street (Canada Post Super Box). I know a lot of people hate them, but I like them. The one on my street has a couple more parcel boxes which means I don't have to go back to the post office to pick up packages.

This evening I went for a 6 mile walk in the country to get my extra steps in. 6.1 Miles, 14,310 Steps, and 18 floors in the hills. Made for a good day... Didn't see any wildlife on the walk, but did see some un-wildlife...

Yes, @shirley123, that was miles, not kilometers. Because I stopped a couple times to talk with old friends that were out working in their yard, it took me 2 hr 14 min. Normally it would have taken me 1 hr 45 min. My total steps for the day are right at 19,000. I was targetting for 20K, but didn't quite make it....

I have a 5 inch step stool at work and I try to step up & down on that thing 50 times every hour. When I get to do that I usually get an extra 300 steps per hour. I have to sneak it between customers. It's not always easy. My co workers think I'm nuts.

Just Do It!
Jog in place, Jog inside your house, jog outside, use the treadmill, don't care what others think about you. Whatever it takes to achieve my daily step goal.

Are you concerned about health and fitness or just meeting your daily step goal?

Man I wish 10k step a day would help me some how since it has nothing to do with health and fitness.

I don't understand the statement that it has nothing to do with health and fitness. Why does American Heart Association recommend we get 10K steps a day? Why does my doctor recommend I walk 5 miles or more a day, which is a little over 10K steps? It seems to be about health and fitness. What is it, if not health and fitness?

Then start running.
