How do you get those extra steps in?

I live about four miles from my workplace and although I haven't yet walked all four miles to or from work, there are a few games I play during the week to increase my stepcount.

Some days I'll take the hillier, windier, unnecessarily long route to BART (San Francisco's heavy-rail rapid transit system). Almost always, I forgo the escalator for the stairs. Today, that act alone added 5 flights of stairs and over 250 steps to my morning journey.

My other favorite "cheat" is high stepping in place. Sure, I may look a little odd bouncing up and down while typing at my makeshift standing desk, but it feels good to keep the blood flowing and the legs moving!

What do you do to get your extra steps in?

Got my Cloud badge today for climbing 8,000 flights of stairs. That's more than 15 miles straight up. Didn't think I had it in me. Apparently I do. Keep moving folks.

I wish I could vote for this post more than once. This is awesome Ali, you are incredible. I climbed another 60 floors today, I wanted to make 100, maybe tomorrow. I did get in 20K steps. Keep Moving, Stepping and Climbing.

Wow Ali that is huge, congratulations!  So inspiring!!  I changed my target thanks to your post, and now aim for 50 flights a day.  I did it yesterday (got 53) - I just made sure that I got up now and then and went up and down 2-3 times, and that sorted it!  I went for 3 little walks yesterday too.  Getting much better 🙂 at home again today and a doctors appt at 3.40pm to get checked out.  Have a great day all!

I am so happy if I have inspired you to tackle stairs. You go Zee and Alex!! I can't believe the difference it has made in my fitness. Keep walking too. It all counts, every little step.

8,000!  Wow!  Stairs are something I'd like to tackle more of, but it's kind of hard when I'm stuck behind a desk.  Great job!

Go for it Weimerj - try going up and down 5 times when you get a chance, like first thing in the morning before you go to work.  I do that at home!  No stairs at work 😞 Thanks Ali you have certainly inspired me to do more.  I have had my Fitbit just over a year and so far have done 12930 flights.  Next badge at 14000 floors!

Thanks, Alex.  I have stairs at work, but I'm always afraid of being away from my desk too long because I feel like manager wonders where I keep going.  Wish I could say, "be back, gotta get my steps in."

Ali you inspire a lot of us. I would not have tried many of the things that I have if it were not for you and Jabrat. I would have settled for 10K steps per day and 10 floors. Because you guys do so much more, I am averaging 20K steps per day and I am up to 60 floors per day. Gotta Keep Moving!

Good job Trooper Alex! The amount of steps you are taking each day so soon after a major car accident should inspire the couch potatoes in my life to get it together. Get it together and get moving. I've shared you story with those in my life that could be moving a lot more.

Say it Weimerj! It might motivate your manager to move more, you never know. I wouldn't have a problem if my employees wanted to move more, I would allow it, the healthier they are the more they are able to show up for work. Keep Moving Weimerj!

Zee,

I should, but I've only been in this particular position for about 3 months, so maybe I'll wait a bit longer.  Thanks for the encouragement!

I've had my Fitbit One for just under a year and:

Floors

The funny thing is I hardly get to climb actual stairs, since there are no tall buildings where I live. Most of my "floors" come from the surroundings where I walk/run. For instance, this is what the terrain looked like during a 21 km run I did earlier this week:

My Fitbit registered 112 floors during this activity. It quickly adds up...

I see the same thing Dominique - yes I live in a hilly City and even the slope up onto the City Wall gives me 3 flights of height!  I run a 5km route into the City and back most mornings, and get 18 flights doing that route 🙂 it does really add up yes!  Keep climbing!

Weimerj, point taken. Show them how good you are at what you do and they'll be happy to support your fitness goals. Keep moving, you will make it happen.

Amazing Alex, I love it. I get most of my floors from the golf course there are some killer hills there, and I love tackling each one of them. So awesome, the Fitbit has opened my mind up to so many possibilities. Keep Moving, Stepping and Climbing my fellow FitBitters
