I live about four miles from my workplace and although I haven't yet walked all four miles to or from work, there are a few games I play during the week to increase my stepcount.
Some days I'll take the hillier, windier, unnecessarily long route to BART (San Francisco's heavy-rail rapid transit system). Almost always, I forgo the escalator for the stairs. Today, that act alone added 5 flights of stairs and over 250 steps to my morning journey.
My other favorite "cheat" is high stepping in place. Sure, I may look a little odd bouncing up and down while typing at my makeshift standing desk, but it feels good to keep the blood flowing and the legs moving!
What do you do to get your extra steps in?

Wow Ali that is huge, congratulations! So inspiring!! I changed my target thanks to your post, and now aim for 50 flights a day. I did it yesterday (got 53) - I just made sure that I got up now and then and went up and down 2-3 times, and that sorted it! I went for 3 little walks yesterday too. Getting much better 🙂 at home again today and a doctors appt at 3.40pm to get checked out. Have a great day all!

8,000! Wow! Stairs are something I'd like to tackle more of, but it's kind of hard when I'm stuck behind a desk. Great job!

Go for it Weimerj - try going up and down 5 times when you get a chance, like first thing in the morning before you go to work. I do that at home! No stairs at work 😞 Thanks Ali you have certainly inspired me to do more. I have had my Fitbit just over a year and so far have done 12930 flights. Next badge at 14000 floors!

Thanks, Alex. I have stairs at work, but I'm always afraid of being away from my desk too long because I feel like manager wonders where I keep going. Wish I could say, "be back, gotta get my steps in."

Zee,
I should, but I've only been in this particular position for about 3 months, so maybe I'll wait a bit longer. Thanks for the encouragement!

I've had my Fitbit One for just under a year and:
The funny thing is I hardly get to climb actual stairs, since there are no tall buildings where I live. Most of my "floors" come from the surroundings where I walk/run. For instance, this is what the terrain looked like during a 21 km run I did earlier this week:
My Fitbit registered 112 floors during this activity. It quickly adds up...

I see the same thing Dominique - yes I live in a hilly City and even the slope up onto the City Wall gives me 3 flights of height! I run a 5km route into the City and back most mornings, and get 18 flights doing that route 🙂 it does really add up yes! Keep climbing!
