How do you get those extra steps in?

I live about four miles from my workplace and although I haven't yet walked all four miles to or from work, there are a few games I play during the week to increase my stepcount.

Some days I'll take the hillier, windier, unnecessarily long route to BART (San Francisco's heavy-rail rapid transit system). Almost always, I forgo the escalator for the stairs. Today, that act alone added 5 flights of stairs and over 250 steps to my morning journey.

My other favorite "cheat" is high stepping in place. Sure, I may look a little odd bouncing up and down while typing at my makeshift standing desk, but it feels good to keep the blood flowing and the legs moving!

What do you do to get your extra steps in?

I do the same thing.  When I'm working at my desk I'll get up frequently to walk around a bit.  Every little bit helps.

I walk for a 10-15 min at work on break in the morning  (10 am or so) (almost a mile, some days its a whole mile), walk 55 mins on lunch (3-4 miles) (12  pm or so)and another 10-15 min walk break around three PM.

I eat anywhere from 60-190 calories in between (breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner

Instead of using the restroom at work that's down the hall I use the one in the stairwell 2 fllights up.  Also when watching tv I pace around the room in intervals.

I turn some music on while cleaning the kitchen and prepping dinner a little Stevie Ray Vaughn, Allman Brothers or Lynyrd Skynyrd can rack up a bunch of extra steps.  Don't forget to turn it up for Sweet Home Alabama.

BobbyD, It is better to burn out than it is to rust.

I walk in place, run in place, park extra far away at the store, or take the long way to get to something.

I will  walk at night in the house until  I reach the next 500 mark on my steps before I will get in bed.  I have found that stepping inplace while brushing my teeth is not a smart thing to do, it can hurt the gums. Now washing your face while stepping is ok, but definately NOT while your putting eye liner or mascara.  lol   that can be a disaster smears and lines everywhere.  So  do not step in place while doing your makeup.  lol

I put a "Walk" reminder on my Outlook calendar and then I snooze it for an hour every hour. I get up and move each time it goes off.

This is one of the best suggestions I've seen and I'm going to incorporate it starting today. It's so easy to get bogged down with work and lose all track of time. I work from home so I can add some crunches, squats, or push ups at the same time.

Walking to work twice a week (about 4.5miles) and using the stairs.  I work on the 9th floor of an office block and not only has this increased my steps the extra exercise has knocked 15% off my cycle route I take at the weekends.

Saying that I'm still not hitting a consistent 10k a day.  My weekly total is fine but I would like to become more consistent in the week.
