I live about four miles from my workplace and although I haven't yet walked all four miles to or from work, there are a few games I play during the week to increase my stepcount.
Some days I'll take the hillier, windier, unnecessarily long route to BART (San Francisco's heavy-rail rapid transit system). Almost always, I forgo the escalator for the stairs. Today, that act alone added 5 flights of stairs and over 250 steps to my morning journey.
My other favorite "cheat" is high stepping in place. Sure, I may look a little odd bouncing up and down while typing at my makeshift standing desk, but it feels good to keep the blood flowing and the legs moving!
What do you do to get your extra steps in?

At night if Im lacking on steps for the day - I march in place during commercials or walk the circle as the kids call it between Kit/LR/DR a few times......I no longer FF thru commercials as that's my time to gain some extra steps!!! I figure if Im relaxing during my shows I can get the blood flowing during commercials! I also have been known to walk the steps an extra time or two and I no longer ask my kids to fetch me things - I get up and do it!!!!
A co worker gave me this tip too - I have a very active job in the AM but at lunchtime ( I work in my kids Elementary School cafeteria) while Im on the computer checking out students lunches....I no longer sit in the chair I stand and march in place or rock back and forth - we joke with each other that we look like we have to go to the bathroom but just doing that in place during that hour shift of standing at the computer has upped my step count this week!!! My co-worker and I both have the force and we challange each other and it's fun to see our steps on the friend tracker and I have caught up to her on steps this past week! Im a huge challange person and competitive so.....if I see someone is beating me, I will STEP it up literally to catch her and I finally did it this week adding these few tips in!

Stepping in place. Not easy but it works 🙂

As a Special Education teacher I am up and moving often, but one of my favorite ways to get in some extra steps is to do a "brain break" or what I call "the 4 minute workout" with the kiddos. I put on a song and they follow my movements. We dance, run in place, slide left to right, do some jumping jacks or ski jumps, shoulder rotations or whatever I think of in the moment. This can be done in HIIT format with 20 seconds of high intensitiy and a 10 second break.
I replaced my desk with a student work station table and all of the desk items are organized in a cabinet. I do not have everything I might need at arms reach, so I get up more often (It also helps me avoid clutter). I make a point of using different work station tables around the classroom throughout the day for small group instruction so I am not relegated to one area.

Now that I'm more aware of taking steps, I even take the long way around my house to get in extra steps, or walk outside with the dogs talking to them, instead of just opening the door to let them out. I walk to the mailbox down the street instead of driving there, and I park farther away from the doors to stores, so I can get the extra steps in....

Fantastic news!
Still struggling here after a car accident on 27 Feb - walking is very painful still and recovery is stopping me moving much. Getting better every day and have made it to 7000 steps today. Bruising on my legs and knees is fading slowly and the pain is getting more bearable every day too. I will be back up to normal exercise levels soon I am sure! So frustrating - I am so active normally and all this sitting with my legs up (as per hospital instructions) is driving me nuts. Still, got to heal, and I am extremely lucky that my car protected me from the broken legs the paramedics suspected. I have been lucky but I just want to run! Keep stepping everyone, be back with you all soon 🙂 xx
