How do you get those extra steps in?

I live about four miles from my workplace and although I haven't yet walked all four miles to or from work, there are a few games I play during the week to increase my stepcount.

 

Some days I'll take the hillier, windier, unnecessarily long route to BART (San Francisco's heavy-rail rapid transit system). Almost always, I forgo the escalator for the stairs. Today, that act alone added 5 flights of stairs and over 250 steps to my morning journey.

 

My other favorite "cheat" is high stepping in place. Sure, I may look a little odd bouncing up and down while typing at my makeshift standing desk, but it feels good to keep the blood flowing and the legs moving! 

 

What do you do to get your extra steps in?

I play Dance Dance Revolution after I get home from work if I havent put in enough steps urring my day. I also park a couple blocks away from work, and try to take a 30 min walk durring my lunch.

I get my extra steps in by walking to the grocery store and bank instead of driving and taking longer ways home on my normal walks or finding new routes to take when just walking around. I will park really far away from the store entrances when I do drive to stores. Sometimes when I am at work I will speed walk from place to place because I am always walking around on the sales floor.

Parking far away in every parking lot I park in - I park at the very end !  Adds up during a week !

Awesome, my office is small but I do get up and walk around more. I also try and walk the office complex 2 or 3 times per day.

I had jury duty today.  Instead of sitting and reading all day, I walked the halls.  I climbed the stairs instead of waiting for overfilled elevators.  At lunch, I took a brisk walk up and down the hills that cover downtown L.A.  I filled my quota for stairs and am well over 10000 steps and still counting.

So continuing my imaginary walk across Canada I have passed the beautiful city of Montreal, Quebec. On my way to Quebec City. 4,451.5 km to date!! Yay!!

My employer has an exercise room so I spend 20 - 25 minutes of my lunch walking on the treadmill.  I eat my meals while working at my desk or during breaks.

 

The parking garage is a great alternative when I want some fresh air.  You can walk up the gradual incline or take the steps.

Every morning that parking far away gets me close to 1000 steps - I will take it !!

I know the suggestion is usually made to do mall walking especially when it's too cold, hot or rainy out there. But for the guys out there especially, and us women who are do it yourselfers as well...instead of a mall, try doing laps and window shopping one of the huge hardware stores. The store I work in is two miles end to end. Walk and browse for even an hour or two and you'll make your minimum steps plus.

Loveabull, I like your comment a lot. Something I have done and I am enjoying very much is my step bench, the kind you use for step aerobics, you get an awesome workout and a ton of steps to boot. I created a playlist on my iPhone and when I get home I pull out the step pop the iPhone onto the ihome radio and get moving. I started with the $27.00 step from Walmart and last week I purchased the fitness center size from Amazon, I also do the Jenny Ford step routines free on you tube.
