I live about four miles from my workplace and although I haven't yet walked all four miles to or from work, there are a few games I play during the week to increase my stepcount.
Some days I'll take the hillier, windier, unnecessarily long route to BART (San Francisco's heavy-rail rapid transit system). Almost always, I forgo the escalator for the stairs. Today, that act alone added 5 flights of stairs and over 250 steps to my morning journey.
My other favorite "cheat" is high stepping in place. Sure, I may look a little odd bouncing up and down while typing at my makeshift standing desk, but it feels good to keep the blood flowing and the legs moving!
What do you do to get your extra steps in?

Living in Wisconsin like many of you this winter has been a long cold one..Due to virtigo issues I had to give up my gym...so to keep moving I use the "walk away the pounds" cd right in my house....I have a hard time staying with routines because I get bored very easy. I now turn the cd on and turn off the sound and watch everyone loves raymond..it makes me laugh while exercising. How many people can say they laugh when they exercise. It's amazing how fast an hour/4 mile walk can go when watching tv...also I use recorded tv so you don't have to watch commercials.
My job is in an apartment complex so when I can I walk the halls and climb the stairs. I just wish my fitbit recorded my movements. After an hour of walking arms moving it recorded that I burned 43 calories.

Hi Alex, it was 3,000 lifetime km!! That is in the 6 months since I had my Fitbit. In the previous 13 months when I was using a phone app I only logged 1,900 km. Motivating - I'll say!!

Jillo that is great stepping work! I am taking a course on Futurelearn (www.futurelearn.com - free, anyone can join anywhere in the World, run by The Open University!) and it has a lot of videos to watch as lectures - stepping in place watching those does the job too 🙂 keep stepping!

I'm new to FitBitting so I haven't developed all the good habits yet. I have a desk job and don't get many steps in during the day. I work long hours and live in the midwest so by the time I get home and eat some supper, it's getting dark & cool again...this makes it really easy to talk myself out of going for a walk. I do have about 10 minutes in the morning spent drying my hair, which is a great time to do some high step walking in place.

Cyber stepping while on the internet - put my laptop on the kitchen counter and step in place from side to side !

Thanks for the ideas! Where there's a will, there's a way I guess! Okay, I am going to put my laptop on the kitchen counter and march and/or go from side to side while I am browsing.. I'll turn on an internet radio station that has zumba or dance music. Or find some zumba youtube videos.
Yesterday I downloaded some dance music (free from some internet sites) onto my mp3 and danced around my basement.
I've decided when I get up from my desk for anything, if I haven't met my goal for the day I'll march at least 100 steps..

Step by step that's how we get those extra steps in. Just checked stats and realized I had crossed the 4,000,000 step mark. This is since November 29, 2013 when I got my Fitbit. Wow!! I certainly never thought in November that I would have achieved this. What a great community. Love the support. Keep moving folks.

Ali that is fab, well done! Your post made me check my totals; I joined in January 2012 and today I will get past the magic 7,000,000 mark 🙂 5582 to go as I sit here. Better get up and get moving!

Getting those steps in is a long walk in the park (pun intended) LOL. It passes time and would not make you feel tired easily. At times I go to Disneyland and spend the whole day walking around.
