MAYbe Step It Up (2021)-Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

April brought a lot of showers in the northeast of the US and May will bring more. But it will also bring lots of flowers and other spring wildlife. So get outside and MAYbe up your step goals for a month!

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt — 3 pictures

The theme of the photo scavenger hunt this month is to find at least three different kinds of flowers (blooms), three different animals on your daily walks.  The more colors and critters the better.

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

I'll join, I really need to up my activity level!  I have an overall goal of doing 500K steps in May, which averages to 16,129 steps per day.  So I'll keep track of my total steps, average daily steps needed as the month goes on, and some smaller step goals.  I am hoping I can complete it all, but I'm due for my 2nd vaccine shot on May 7th and I'm a little worried about the side effects derailing me.  Hoping they won't be too bad, my first shot was a breeze!

Off to an inauspicious start this month, unfortunately. Yesterday was a weird day, beginning with waking up very early (before 4!), making 2 kinds of flaxseed crackers, baking brownies to take to an afternoon party, starting a new painting, etc. Hope things calm down today to get in my steps and exercise.

@SteppingBooks  - if you figure out the weight loss secret, please share. I have been unsuccessful in my efforts (just been fighting to not gain!).
@Baltoscott - the Cutback Coach App sounds intriguing. I might need to check it out.
@stoughjr  - I am SO happy you’ll get to see your Mom. If all goes as planned, I’ll be going from Switzerland to Texas to see my Mom as it’s been 2 years since my last trip. She’ll be turning 86.
Thanks for the encouragement @YojanaFitbit

@Heather-S - I’ve heard different reports about adverse reactions to the vaccine. I’d just plan a day or two to pamper yourself afterwards just in case. (I got the Moderna vaccine and my first shot affected me much more than the second, but I didn’t push myself til I felt better).

@Jotex My first shot was totally fine, just a sore deltoid for 48 hours.  I'm hoping the second won't be bad, but like you said, I'm planning on having a few lazy days in case I do feel sick.  🙂

@Jotex Don't worry, we have a lot of days to our best. I love your busy day thought, it's okay to have other activities too. 😉 I've also heard that some people had adverse reactions to the vaccine, not all of them but some. I hope you don't feel any reaction with the second shot @Heather-S. You're doing an amazing job with your new goals. 😎

I'm amazed at how quickly the crowds have dropped at the mass vaccination sites. I got my second shot a couple of weeks ago and there were hundreds of people in line then. The place I went to (convention center downtown) was closed today (Sunday) though I think it is still open for testing and shots during the week.  At other big site, at the Ravens Football stadium, the traffic was really light. I suspect these huge sites in Maryland will shut down soon and most of those who still need to get the shot will get it at the pharmacy chains.

@Heather-S -- I had a slight fever for my second Pfizer shot for a few hours the day after the shot, but not really a big deal. I know some have felt kind of sick for several days, but for most of the people I know it hasn't been too big a deal.
