MAYbe Step It Up (2021)-Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

April brought a lot of showers in the northeast of the US and May will bring more. But it will also bring lots of flowers and other spring wildlife. So get outside and MAYbe up your step goals for a month!

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt — 3 pictures

The theme of the photo scavenger hunt this month is to find at least three different kinds of flowers (blooms), three different animals on your daily walks.  The more colors and critters the better.

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

Use Cutback Coach for the month 3/31

@Jotex -- I'm only a week and a half in, but I'm kind of liking Cutback Coach. My approach over the past 4 years or so with respect to mindful drinking has been to only drink on odd numbered days of the month, which forces me into 'dry' days half of the time. That's still my basic rule, but I'm finding myself swapping days so I can have some wine or beer on the weekend for social events.  This week I planned it out on Sunday -- two drinks on Wednesday for Cinco de Mayo, two on Friday, two on Saturday. CC sends me a text of my daily goal once in the morning and again in the evening. I 'log' a drink by responding to the text it keeps a running total of how I'm doing, and then asks me to confirm my totals the next day.

Thanks @Baltoscott . I’ve decided to also give it a whirl. One advantage I see is ‘mindfulness’ and another is ‘accountability’ to my goals. I’ve been using MyFitnessPal for about 8 years and that has helped me keep an eye on my food / calories consumption and the macros. I think Cutback Coach will do the same for alcohol consumption.

Managed a little over 17K yesterday.  Hoping for the same today.  I want more today, but the weather may not cooperate and last night we had bad storms, which kept both of my dogs awake most of the night, so I didn't get much sleep.  Going to be a loooong day at work.  Everyone is doing well so far!

@Baltoscott Great pictures! You have some noise neighbors there, the sound of late summer.

@NellyG I really liked the flowers and a cactus from your garden. I don't have too much space at home to have one.

Another 17K step day, but the really good thing is that I finally made it back to the gym last night!  Our gym has been open the whole time, but I wanted to wait for the vaccine before I started going back.  So last night I went!  I just did some light weights so I wouldn't be too sore and then did 30 minutes on the elliptical.  Felt great to go back!

@Heather-S I'm glad you're back on the gym, I really miss weight lifting and some other machines I used to use. I have to improvise at home some new routines, but we're still waiting for the vaccine to get here too.

15,805: average daily steps needed

1/5 days over 20K steps

5/20 days over 15K steps

Well, I managed only 15,500 steps.  I had planned to mow the lawn after work, which usually gets me 4,000-5,000 steps, but our mower was acting up and my husband and I had to stop to do some work on it and clean it.  By the time that was done, we decided to stop for the night.  I had to shower and wash my hair and when that I was done I just wanted to lay down.

For today (day 6), I'm hoping I can manage 20K.  I plan to go to the gym after work, so crossing my fingers I can make 20K happen!
