Maybe around 11,000 steps. But maintaining an average pace of 180 steps per minute over a period of one hour is some serious walking. Why would that matter?

Why not just go for it and answer your question ? You might want to just run in place in order to maximize the steps.
Good luck - let us know

@Nicola_grecAs @Dominique has posted "11,000 steps is serious walking". With my stride length I would need to walk at 7.9 kmh (4.9 mph), I can do that in spurts. I can average 8,000 steps/hour 5.75 kmh (3.6 mph) and at a brisk pace, sometimes can push it to 9000 steps, 6.5 kmh (4.0 mph).
It all depends on the individual with your height and your stride length. The typical average is about 42% of your height for the stride and that can vary, ironically my stride is 41.8% of my height.
This link is typical and you can then work out your speed to achieve your maximum number of steps.

@whomeYour timing was perfect and I did just that because I had my Polar HRM serviced and it was a lovely warmish spring morning in Melbourne with some wind. So I selected pavement walking and the direction around my house has some long slow inclines as shown on the Google pedometer chart.
I achieved 7,555 steps for 62 minutes@ @ ave HR of 70.3% of maxHR and the Fitbit One recorded 5.48 kms. Not bad when Google Pedometer was 5.24 kms and the GPS in the Android beta test was 5.61 kms. The GPS is a little wobbly, had me in a bowling green and jumped the highway, but for a Beta test, an excellent result. Only 220 metres difference over 5.5 km is excellent.
I had to overwrite the calories because we know there is a bug there and the extra calories resulted form the long inclines. My form of interval training..
@Heybales @Dominique and @WendyB for your information. All good fun. I received 62 minutes VAM with the Polar calories which were 30% higher than the Fitbit which was expected. The overwrite with a manual activity works and I keep all of the data. No need to delete the MobileRun data.

Love it! You walked right by a fitness place. How many people did you pity going indoors as you enjoyed the great day?
What if you could do the Tim Conway old man walk with those little bitty steps, how many steps in 1 hr then?
As mentioned though, really depends on person and their stride.

I cannot track faster that 2.29 steps per second, but I can walk full stride faster than that. I believe there is a limitation in fitbit tracking that includes the flex and Charge 2 that I have. When speed training short distances of 200-500 steps the tracker records 0.
