OctoberFest 2023 Step Challenge and Scavenger Hunt

October

It is the first full month of fall, cooler weather around in the Baltimore area; I’m even wearing long pants some days! Holidays and parties are around the corner and I am trying to be mindful of all the goodies coming my way in the next few months. Moderation. Moderation. Moderation. But for NOW, lets just enjoy the weather and the changing seasons and get out an MOVE.

General monthly instructions are below, including the monthly picture scavenger hunt.
How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt

The theme this month is … seasonal changes (a tree or flower or storefront at the beginning of the month, and again at the end); Halloween decorations/costumes, trick or treaters; German OctoberFEST related.

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

@SteppingBooks  aha 😏 I have a google account (use gmail and YouTube), but I haven’t linked it to my Fitbit, yet.
Will it affect our participation in challenges, like this one, I wonder?

@Jotex  I'm not sure if it will.  I assumed they were keeping the community boards open, but I don't think there has been any official announcement one way or the other on that.

@Jotex @SteppingBooks — I migrated a couple of weeks ago. The main thing that happens is that once migrated you log in through the google link on the logon screen (which brings up the google account associated with your gmail), as opposed to typing in the email and password you used to create your fitbit account.  Once you log in everything here will look the same including your screen name and your ability to participate in threads like this one in the forums. However, you won’t be able to message any current fitbit friends through the fitbit app until they migrate their account. (I’ve noticed that once someone you know migrates after you did, that you often get notifications of old posts they made in app groups you both belong to as if the posts were just made. Yesterday I got 76 notifications - all of which I had seen before - one after the other when a fitbit friend migrated her account).

@Baltoscott — thanks for sharing from your experience. Since I rarely message or hear from anyone on the Fitbit App any more, I guess it really doesn’t matter. Does the Fitbit App look the same with google login?

There is a separate app update that is rolling out. It will eventually roll out to you whether you migrate or not. I like it, but those who don’t are very vocal right now.

@Baltoscott  I had seen some postings about suddenly seeing a lot of old notifications come through.  I'm kind of surprised that they allow old notifications to show.

Dogwoods at the front of the house - if it gets colder than at present (21C yesterday, which is way too warm for October) then the stems should start to redden.

These parasol mushrooms got it wrong two months ago, when we had autumn in August.  Now we've got an Indian summer in October, they've come out again.  I've not seen them twice in a year like that.  They won't last until the end of the month, but I'll photo them daily.
