Pain Before and after working out but not during

I started at 259 in January and I'm 226 now. I've been walking on a treadmill and counting calories. I typically walk 1.85 miles to 1.95 miles in a half hour. (According to the treadmill and my daily motivation) My upper groin area and the outside of my hips stiffen up and hurt when I sit or am inactive a short period of time. This first started about a month or two ago. When I walk around the office I hurt and am very stiff. The pain is about a 3 on a ten point scale. It gets better as I exercise and most of my exercise time is pain free. I did not have this pain at 259. Curse you exercise! (I kid) I've pretty much been ignoring it because it doesn't hurt while I am exercising and I do not want to stop getting results. I've been taking Ibuprofen but I'm not sure daily Ibuprofen is the answer. Any advice?

I experienced something a bit similar when I started working out. It was from my muscles being too tight and I had trigger points. I bought something called the stick flexible massage roller and it has been a godsend! Maybe you have some trigger points? Are you stretching? There are some great videos on YouTube about trigger points and different things you can do to help release them.

Pain is a message from your body. If you ignore it, bad things may happen. My guess is you don't feel the pain during exercise because your body is warmed up, but before and after, you're blood isn't flowing as quickly. 

 

I would consult a doctor to be safe. I have absolutely no idea what the cause might be. 

 

You say you didn't have this pain until you lost the weight - but it could be the exercise that triggered the pain in the first place and the weight loss has nothing to do with it. Someone smarter than I am will have to help you with this.

The pain has not increased in a month and remains fairly constant in level. I have found no correlation with the amount I exercise to an increase in pain. I went out of town for work for 3 days and did little exercise. I did not notice a decrease in pain levels. Certain days I go to the gym twice and do not notice an increase in pain.

 

I do not look forward to getting an appontment with my Doctor to have him refer me to an orthopedist. My wallet is only so deep.

 

I was hoping my body would get used to whatever was going on. I guess I'll treat with Ibuprofen and ice for another month and reevaluate the need for a doctor then.

I agree with @Ukase You need to consult your Dr. to find out what is wrong. Do not ignore it

I have a similar thing that happens to me. When I sit for long periods of time- say two hours without any significant movement, I am fine while I sit, but when I get up, everything hurts. Like a cramp. As soon as I move a few steps, it all untightens and I am fine. I think you should consult a doctor to be sure. For me it feels like my body prefers motion so long periods of sitting is not good for it. This is not an issue at night when I am still for hours. just sitting during the day..I actually suspect it could be my posture over the computer- tied to a phone.

do warm up exercises beforehand

 

I know the feeling, when I wake up in the morning my joints are stiff and have to do stretches etc to loosen them up, and I am only 39!

 

take it easy and do not over push yourself, you will regret it at a later date

Make sure your Stretching before and after your workouts or light yoga may help there's many free videos on YouTube of your choosing....could be lactic acid buildup, inflammation or a joint issue I'm not a doctor but definitely get the advise from one 🙂

I had to do some PT about 10 years ago on my knee due to a car wreck. I remember them telling me I had very tight achilles tendons. I'm going to start doing those stretches again and if things don't improve in 30 days I will go see my Doctor.
