STANDby July 2024 Step Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

STANDby July?  Honestly, it’s been so hot you might want to practice standing in the shade or head beck inside for most of the day just to survive!  Well, maybe it’s not so bad if you get out early. So do that, move about, pay attention to the heat and do your harder workouts early in the day (or inside with AC) and stay hydrated (and if you live in the southern hemisphere layer up when you go out)  🙂

How It Works:

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Picture Scavenger Hunt — 3 pictures

Art? Sez who?Art? Sez who?

The theme this month is one we’ve done before — street art.  Pretty much anything outside. Murals, sculptures, graffiti … functional art is especially cool (i.e., painted fire hydrants etc.)

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

I saw some folks working on this mural of sorts along a bridge near the train station. Turned out one of them was the artist who was hired to paint it by an a non-profit "Art Alliance" that works with the city.  She told me that they were on day 39 and should have it finished this week. Cool.

Great work, @UnderTenPercent!. Once you got that bit between your teeth, you were always going to smash your target.

Do you have a figure in mind for the whole of July?  The highest I've seen on here is one of Peter's on the Lifetime Steps thread.  He did 1,563,163 in July a few years ago.

Quick health update.

I've discovered that our beleaguered National Health Service has a fantastic facility in London - the National Hospital For Neurology and Neurosurgery.  I'm sure that's where I need to go for a proper diagnosis to be made - it will be full of neurological experts who are likely to talk to each other.  I need a referral from the Doc that I've been referred to, and am awaiting his reply to my request for the same.  I emailed a letter to him about a week ago.  Since then, of course, we've had the NHS admin crippled by the CrowdStrike sage, but they ought to recover from that soon.  I'm doing plenty of reading, Sudokus and music composition for my church choir - they won't believe what's hit them when I eventually get back! - but am very limited otherwise.  I try to do little bits of practical tasks first thing in the morning, after using the pedalling machine - 90-minute jobs have to be spread out over several days.

Hey ho!  At least I have a nice view from the chair I occupy for most of the day. 🙂

Talking of which, @Baltoscott, is that a bit of hands-free cycling I detect as you cross that bridge?

@Vidd Not too sure. I'm definitely going to be maintaining at least 10,000 steps, so if I had to guess at least an additional 110,000 steps.

@Vidd - I love cycling hands-free on my unicycle, and I've even been known to take a picture or two while doing so, but in that picture my feet are on the ground. That view you've got from your chair is pretty awesome. Is it the Rear Window? Maybe you'll see Grace Kelly's ghost.

Keep setting your pedaling goals.  My fingers are crossed that you get a response from your Doc soon, and that a trip to London is in your near future.

Not much news to report.   The system for medical referrals in England is that they come from your doctor, but if he or she refers you to someone else, then a further referral comes from that second person.  So either my home doctor or the neurologist has got it wrong because they've both said that the referral has to be done by the other person.  My home doc has got it right - I looked it up - but neither of them act as fast as I would like.  I should hear something on Monday.....

Here's the actual view from the front window, that I look out on from my day chair. We got it for my wife, as she's got arthritic knees - but there's good news there as she finally met the surgeon the day before yesterday who is going to fix them for her.  I've stolen the chair from her for the moment.

I'm not counting it as street art!

@Baltoscott I think we need to see a picture from your unicycle when your feet are off the ground next time!  Thanks for your kind wishes.

What a beautiful view out of your window @Vidd and I sure hope you find something out on Monday.

A lot of cool artwork on your streets @Baltoscott

Huge congrats for your 1 M steps this month! Wow!!!  @UnderTenPercent

I am finally able to post After a couple long weeks and my street art below was taken in our park. US Senator Everett Dirksen IL, Who lived in our town years ago, was a really good man, a marigold flower lover, and loved our special Mineral Springs park. His statue, below, is right in the center of our park.
And for the other photo I had to add some sky candy: a family of Osprey across the lake.
