Yes, that's normal. You'll probably get a step if you hit a bump, but not otherwise while pedaling.

Exactly, from my average roads I ride on, I get about 70% of what would normally be steps, ie each foot going down.
Bigger issue though - the calorie burn based on incomplete steps and formula based on steps being walking or running - is totally incorrect for biking.
Now over to friends house - eh, no big whoop.
Start doing an hour as exercise - now need to manually log it for whatever average speed you did.
