I've heard of people with trackers doing virtual hikes on known trails or in cities. Does anyone know about this?
"virtual hikes", like doing them on your computer?
Real hikes can be done, and with a GPS the route can be seen.

Thanks. I had heard of a group doing the Appalachian Trail through their trackers. That one has info online. Thought it might be fun to get a group together for one of the trails. Or, Paris, perhaps 🙂

Jileha, Walking4fun looks great. Thanks.
How would we do Paris? A competition? Group effort? Let me think about this?

Actually any virtual group walk would be fun. Count me in on whatever you decide. I am very new to this.

I was in a group on MyFitnessPal last year who did a "Walk to Mordor" and back. Basically everyone logged on at least once a week to add their mileage to the tally and there were milestones along the way, just like in the books. There is website devoted to this particular feat here. I would definitely be interested in something like this. I didn't see what website you guys were talking about in this thread though, can someone post a link?

This is a great site for a virtual hike across the United States. It's easy to log data and you can compete with others. If you are inactive for too long, about a month, it may delete your account.
In my signature, you can find a virtual hike around all 48 states. It has an animated Google Street View for each leg. You can follow the blog or get the book which will have all the waypoints. It will also show the weather for the day you hike the leg. This is a realistic hike which can actually be walked. If a person wants to do it for real, let me know. I've changed some of the routing to save some miles and avoid a section which wouldn't be easy to walk.

I just did my daily check in to the Lawrence Berkeley Lab virtual walk across the US and learned that the site (exercise.lbl.gov) has been discontinued. Booo! I have been on this trail for about 15 months and had just reached Colorado. Not only was the site a great motivational tool, but my daily dose of informaiton on US geography has been taken away. I sent an email to the Berkeley contact person hoping that the site will be continued for current participants, or at least for those of us more than half way to the Pacific Ocean.

Can you tell me where you view the sites? Phone? Computer? Can they be seen on you-tube?

@Strem2 I have only view it on the computer
You could probably view on the phone but there are a lot of pictures on each walk and each leg of the walk.
No not on youtube at all

The iPhone app "walk the distance" uses walking distance recorded automatically via the Health App and shows you where you would be on the Appalachian Trail. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/walk-the-distance/id634548793

this site has really cool virtual hikes that you can link to Fitbit/apple watch, etc. $27 US dollars though?! Could be worth it to some but I can’t spend that kind of money to walk
