High protein snacks?

ANSWERED

Have hypoglycemia.. I hate having to eat every five minutes. Are there any high protein/carb snacks that will keep me full (and my blood sugar levels higher) longer?

This would help so much!

PB2 is amazing!! It even comes in (unsweetened) CHOCOLATE!! I'll add some to my protein shake for a little "naughtiness" without the guilt. I just found a couple recipe blogs by googling "PB2 recipes."

I have the same problem.

If you do not eat often, you may faint.

Try to eat 5 times a day. I recommend eating almonds or any other nut, they are high in protein and have a healthy fat.

Guuuuuurrrrrrrrllllllll I got you!

Boiled eggs with or witout the yolk.  With yolk 70 cals without 33.

Perky jerky.  It's turkey jerky that's only 50 cals an ounce.

Mix chopped fruit with chopped up cheese sticks.  That way you can do half a cheese stick for each serving!

Hummus or bean dip!  Loooovvve it.  Also walmart sells this crackers called veggie crisps, and they are 120 cals for like 18 chips.  ( or something close to that ).

Protein shakes.  BUT I buy skim milk and the powder to do it myself.  I use EAS whey protein shake it's 150 cals for two scoops.  Which means I can use one scoop and still get protein and fewer cals.  Or you can make a giant serving and just have little cups when you need it.

These are my go to snacks when I'm feeling low of suga!  I hope that helps.  I've had a really hard time trying to find snacks that are light and high in protein.  Try looking at cookinglight.com as well.

The protein balls (I made with Muscle Milk Vanilla Creme powder, PB and honey) are phenomenal! Thank you so much for sharing. For me, they will make the perfect post-gym protein treat. Tastes like a cookie!

I really need recipe ideas. I have developed some pretty severe allergies in the last 6 months. No chicken, turkey, beef, pork, grains (including rice, oats, wheat) or legumes (including all beans and soy). I have problems getting my protein levels up. I have gained weight like crazy since I started eating the foods I am not allergic to. I would love food or recipe ideas. The doctor sent me to work with a nutriionist and every idea she came up with included one of the things I can not eat.

That's a lot of allergies. My heart goes out to you. Have you spoken to a nutrionalist? There is probably a protein powder a doctor or nutrionalist can recommend or prescribe. Thanks to a tip from a poster to these forums, I now enjoy my powder in coffee with a little cinnamon. I also have diet restrictions and get a good deal of my protein from a powder that is brown rice based. It is gluton free, dairy free and soy free.

Can you eat peanuts and eggs? A serving of a good, organic peanut butter will provide you with about 7g of protein. Almond butter gives you 8g. Can't put it on bread but both are delicious on celery or in lettuce wraps sprinkled with raisins. I also like to dip apple slices in peanut butter.

Good luck in your efforts! You've taken a big, first step by posting here and asking for help. You can do this!

Carol, thatnks for the encouragement. I can not eat peanuts (legume), nor can I have rice (grain). I haven't found any bread I can eat. I have worked with a nutrionalist and she was no help. My diet consists of fish and eggs. The fish isn't easy to take to work and eat unless it is tuna and I quickly burned out on tuna. I can have treen nuts and eat a lot of those, but have found that they are really putting the weight on me and I am even more uncomfortable.

Here is some more info I found:
- Use tree nut butter (found in many health food stores) to make lettuce rolls ups. Add some raisins
- Here is an article on vegetables that are high in protein. You'd have to cross some off the list, but brocolli & spinach have a surprising amount of protein and both are very filling. (http://www.fitday.com/fitness-articles/nutrition/healthy-eating/7-high-protein-vegetables-to-include...

Two questions:
- Can you drink milk? That has a lot of protein.
- Have you checked out quinoa? It is different from other grains. It is the seed, not the grain itself and is related to the spinach family. It has no gluten. It is also a prefect protein in that it has all the components needed for the body to absorb the protein.

That is all I have except a suggestion to switch to a lot of vegetables and salads. A serving of nuts can add protein to a salad. So can a couple hard boiled eggs. There is no way around it. You need to come to terms with the fact that this will be a major life changer. Only YOU can decide to take the healthy path. But you can do it!! Please keep writing.

@tpauline I found PB2 at Wal-Mart the other day (needs to be a Wal-Mart with a grocery section, obviously). Didn't buy it, but I was surprised it was there, especially in my town, where eating healthy isn't generally the priority for people.

Quinoa is great when flavored with curry and dried fruits and nuts.  Check out Deborah Madison's recipe for Quinoa Timbales.  Yummy!
