I used a laptop to connect the USB charger, then update the fitbit. It failed with many tries using the phone or ipad.

I have the same issue and I contacted customer service several times, tried everything available online, nothing work and 25% for a new one doesn't work, I received a new one after the first one failed, this is the second one, not cheap so you have to have a better customer service

My Ionic was no longer reading my heart rate, but I also noticed that other little things were starting to hiccup with the readings as well, for instance, my waterlogging was logging that I had consumed 15,000 litres per day regularly. So I did all the factory reset stuff, winding up with the red cross and data not cleared message. I was lucky that my Ionic reset after the red cross but still no heart rate being read. This is what finally worked for me (I took on board all the suggestions but simplified it because the factory reset just wasn't working).
1. Unpair the device
2. Delete the device from your Fitbit app
3. Turn off the phone, not just restart it (treat it like a computer and wait 30 seconds)
4. Delete the Fitbit app
5. Turn off the phone as above
6. Pair the device on bluetooth
7. Set up the device through the Fitbit app
P.S. Make sure your phone is fully charged and your device is connected to the device charger.
My Ionic is now working perfectly, hope the same happens for everyone else 🙂

I have tried to do this multiple times, and it still doesn't work. There is no way to reach to set it up with the phone again, my phone doesn't even pick it up as a device that is Bluetooth.

My reboot and fix only lasted for the afternoon, the water logging logged another random 14,000 litres and then everything stopped working again. I tried the factory reset in settings of the device as a last resort and now my Fitbit is dead, it won't restart at all. I will have to get a new one, devastated 😞

Had the same issue. After noticing several errors and issues (like no dimming setting) I had to do a factory reset. Then the Data not cleared message showed up. Contacted support and tried everything noted in posts above ... they offered the 25% ... this is my third major Fitbit “death” in 5 years. Leaving the family and getting an Apple Watch.

Having to dump everything and start over has almost become a bi monthly process. Very annoying. Plus every time I lose all my achievements like the fact I have walked the length of Italy in just one year.

Hello,
I learned how to reset it by watching this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVmd_1v3G9w.
I, of course, deleted the Ionic from the FitBit App on my phone. And then I went to the section where I can add or set up the device.
When you reset the Ionic and the FitBit logo appears on the Ionic, you have to quickly add it on your phone. Of course, the Ionic reset back to the Red X but I restarted it again and then the phone was able to locate the Ionic.
In the video, he did not reset again so that the FitBit logo appears but when it is in that "mode" the phone can see your device.
I hope this helps.
