How to get Ionic to recognize elliptical activity?

Hi! I used Fitbit Charge 3 for a year and was very happy with it... until I noticed it also counted my hours of driving or being on the scooter as steps... 😮
On this forum I read that Ionic does not do that. So, I purchased one to replace my charge3.
I workout every morning on my elliptical trainer, and was used that my fitbit C3 recognized that automatically as exercise and so it used to get stored in the "'registered training" section as elliptical, automatically. The app is also setup to recognize elliptical after 10 mins.

Now, it does not do that anymore. And it hardly counts steps either during my elliptical exercise. The only noticeable change I see after 30 mins of elliptical training, is some 'active minutes'.

Can I do something to change that? I know I can track it manually in the app, but I keep forgetting that. Also, the 'training' section on the fitbit itself does not show elliptical as an option. Please assist! Would be very sad if it turned our I traded in unwanted functionality (registering drives as steps) for not logging functionality?

@laura_wz Welcome to the Community. I appreciate the time you took to share your experience with Fitbit Ionic and the details mentioned regarding the phone you have.

I'm glad to hear that you used to have a Fitbit Charge 3 and you upgraded to an Ionic. Your Fitbit Ionic should track automatically your elliptical activity, I would like you to confirm that you've set elliptical activity to be detected automatically by following these steps:

  1. Tap the Today tab

, then tap the Exercise tile

    .
  2. Tap the gear icon

     in the top right.
  3. Tap an exercise, and adjust the duration or turn off Auto-recognize.

Regarding your step count, you can learn more about Fitbit devices accuracy in this article

Let me know how it goes. I'll be around if you need further assistance.

Hi! Thanks, I checked that. Elliptical is switched ON and longer than 10mins. I used the machine for 20 mins this morning and noothing. Not even active minutes 😟

@laura_wz Thanks for getting back. I appreciate that you've checked your settings.

We've found that some customers have a better experience with SmartTrack if they try wearing their tracker on a different wrist. Because SmartTrack recognizes activities based on the continuous movement of your arms, in some cases, changing the wrist that you wear your tracker on can improve activity recognition.

Remember that if you change your wrist, you should also change your handedness setting. For more information on how wearing your tracker affects accuracy, please see the article How accurate are Fitbit trackers. For instructions about updating your settings, see the article What should I know about SmartTrack exercise detection?

Regarding your watch not tracking active minutes, please check this article to learn more about how your Fitbit will track your active minutes. Could you let me know if during the day your Ionic isn't tracking your active minutes besides the elliptical activity?

Keep me posted!
