Fitbit Update 08/23/2018: Hi everyone!
Just wanted to thank you all for your participation in this thread.
Since the majority of Ionic users have successfully updated to OS 2.1.1 (v32.10.20) I have decided to close this topic to further posts.
If you still have not updated your Ionic to OS 2.1.1, check out this post for some best practices on how to update your device.
If you are experiencing an issue with your Ionic unrelated to the firmware-up process, I invite you to start a new topic on the community or find a related topic.
Thanks again to all the great feedback we have received on this firmware. Looking forward to the next Fitbit OS update!
Fitbit Update - 6/7/18: Fitbit OS 2.1.1 has been released to 100% of Ionic users!
Hi, everyone!
I am excited to announce the release of Fitbit OS 2.1.1! (Firmware Version: 32.10.20)
We've started to roll out this update to 30% of Ionic users. This is a progressive rollout, and all Ionic users can expect to have it within a few weeks. We roll out releases in phases as a cautionary measure so that we can monitor performance closely and make adjustments if needed.
You can find the release notes for this new OS version by following the link, here.
Step by step instructions for updating your Ionic can be found here.
As a reminder, I recommend updating your Ionic over a home Wi-Fi network as this can greatly reduce the time it can take to get set up. For more information on connecting your Ionic to Wi-Fi, check out this article.
If you run into any trouble updating your Ionic, I can also recommend reviewing these troubleshooting tips.
Looking forward to hearing everyone's feedback on the latest release. If you have any questions, feel free to post them in this thread.

Hi everyone
I don't believe the battery issues are related to this firmware, as i deliberately haven't updated to it because of some of the bug reports and I'm still having the battery issue. My ionic went from holding 4 days charge with use of GPS etc to barely holding a day, almost overnight, without changing anything in my settings. Overnight last night while i was sleeping it somehow drained from 74% to 11%! Almost as if the battery has become damaged or is failing, or GPS is running in the background. I'm in touch with support but expecting a warranty replacement (which will be annoying as will force me onto latest firmware which has a terrible bug with GPS connection dropping out if run activity not started immediately).

This is very interesting... I wonder if it's got to do with an app update? Especially since they announced the backend changes?
Though I have turned off all-day sync, always on, notifications etc, who knows - perhaps it is the app that's misbehaving.
Though that would only explain the battery drain, and certainly not why batteries are suddenly not holding charge any more?

Yeah, I've turned off all the syncing, removed everything (factory reset), turned off the automatic screen turning on thing... It's been 24 hours and I've lost 10%. But this is hardly a critical test of the thing, as this isn't what I bought it for. I bought it for running with GPS and music.
I just don't know if I have the time / energy / patience to deal with trying to get it to work like it's supposed to.

I recently updated my ionic to the new firmware...and now my ionic does not turn on or charge after mysteriously dying while on charger overnight. Is this a problem associated with this new firmware update? If so, what is the fix?
I have tested multiple usb outlets and even a new charger...to no avail. I have also tried to “restart” and “reset”, but that’s impossible when the device has zero charge. I’ve had the ionic less than two months.

Curious—how old was your Ionic when you needed to do such a dramatic clean up?
Recieved mine as a Christmas Gift, started the battery drain in early June corresponding to the recent Firmware Update. Hard to believe it is Firmware, but even then, you will see the same complaints with the Firmware update in February.

Got mine at the very end of March, and my battery life fell to half with the latest update...

Not a critical test I agree, but mine still lost 50% with all of that done, so I have an issue with my battery. Mine would get just over 3 days of charge with 20 to 30 minute GPS and Music each day and up to 4+ days otherwise. In order for FitBit to replace mine, tech support wanted the stripped down test, and for whatever it is worth, they replaced it.

Interesting, does not fall with the logic of bad batches of hardware, but more on the firmware. If it is Firmware only, I would expect that my replacement that arrives on Saturday will do the same thing, I will check which version it is running on. It would seem that if it is Firmware, that simply replacing them would not be the most appropriate (logical) action for FitBit. We shall see, I just hope it works!

Could be, but I didn't buy it direct from FitBit so I'm not sure about the batch freshness. On the other hand the watch wasn't in stock at the store and they had to order it from somewhere in Europe, so presumably it *was* fresh.

If you look back on the comments post the update in February, you will see the same battery drain issue, so it is puzzling! My battery drain coincdidentally began with the most recent Firmware update, and I had the last one done as well as I had received my Ionic as a gift for Christmas.

Yes, it is a curious yet frustrating thing! I am way too analytical to accept any one hypothesis at this point as it seems to be all over the gamit with how old watches are and the Firmware updates for both February and June.

They likely have more than one source on their batteries, not so much a bad batch of watches, but bad batteries being used in the manufacturing process. Ha, it will never be certain!

Battery drain with GPS is intense. I can’t get a round of golf in with GPS on. 3.5hrs
I only used mine for a couple of walks of 20 minutes or so daily with music and it would last 3.5 days. Are you using a non FitBit app during your golf or the FitBit Exercise app?

My new Ionic that I received a week ago is still doing great on this new update (32.10/.20).
My battery only drops about 15-20% per day. On a 1 hour bike ride, I loose an additional 10% battery with the GPS going.
So the excessive battery drain is not necessarily a direct consequence of the new update in all watches. We'll see if it happens over more time to my Ionic. I also don't have Bluetooth or Sync issues. To the extent they exist, I usually trace sync problems to my phone.
With perhaps some fraction of a million of the Ionics sold, even low probability failures get noticed. Some devices may have high drain due to hardware issues or a number of other obscure causes. The half dozen people noticing battery drain issues near the firmware update might just be coincidence.
Hopefully Fitbit can sort out these failures. And my new watch doesn't fall victim as well.
