Fitbit Update 08/23/2018: Hi everyone!

Just wanted to thank you all for your participation in this thread.

Since the majority of Ionic users have successfully updated to OS 2.1.1 (v32.10.20) I have decided to close this topic to further posts.

If you still have not updated your Ionic to OS 2.1.1, check out this post for some best practices on how to update your device.

If you are experiencing an issue with your Ionic unrelated to the firmware-up process, I invite you to start a new topic on the community or find a related topic.

Thanks again to all the great feedback we have received on this firmware. Looking forward to the next Fitbit OS update! Robot Happy

Fitbit Update - 6/7/18: Fitbit OS 2.1.1 has been released to 100% of Ionic users!

Hi, everyone! Smiley Happy

I am excited to announce the release of Fitbit OS 2.1.1! (Firmware Version: 32.10.20)

We've started to roll out this update to 30% of Ionic users. This is a progressive rollout, and all Ionic users can expect to have it within a few weeks. We roll out releases in phases as a cautionary measure so that we can monitor performance closely and make adjustments if needed.

You can find the release notes for this new OS version by following the link, here.

Step by step instructions for updating your Ionic can be found here.

As a reminder, I recommend updating your Ionic over a home Wi-Fi network as this can greatly reduce the time it can take to get set up. For more information on connecting your Ionic to Wi-Fi, check out this article

If you run into any trouble updating your Ionic, I can also recommend reviewing these troubleshooting tips

Looking forward to hearing everyone's feedback on the latest release. If you have any questions, feel free to post them in this thread.

I can’t use GPS for a 4hr round of golf without the battery going dead. It won’t last for your marathon.

Since you used it on the Walking Exercise, you can turn off the GPS within the settings within that exercise unless of course you actually wanted to map the course as you walked.  Hopefully you play well, as mine would show in visiting every hazard and them some. 🙂

Well said. I bought mine for those same reasons. None of which work as advertised.

Battery drain with GPS is intense. I can’t get a round of golf in with GPS on. 3.5hrs

Fitbit says the battery should last 10 hours with the GPS turned on. I've used GPS on my Ionic a couple times on bike rides for an hour each. Each time the battery drain was a little over 10% for the hour, in agreement with Fitbit's specs. If you're only getting 3.4 hours, you need to call support for help, and maybe a replacement.

Were you also running music or anything else at the time that could cause extra drain? (I was only running the GPS, not music in my ride.)

BTW, my Ionic GPS tracks are very good with no drop outs and the tracks match a return course within a few feet. Are you under trees when it drops out?

Wide open sky with dropouts.
Nothing running but walking app and GPS

I had that same issue. Factory reset did not fix it.

So, I have finally decided to do the update.

3 hours passed and the progress bar still on zero progress.

I can already feel the regrets taking over.

I can't understand why fitbit make us pass thru these tests of faith.

I was told by Fitbit that the update over WiFi can take 30-60 minutes. But update over Bluetooth can take hours and may fail.  My update took just over 30 minutes and I saw steady progress on the bar of the phone app and a background on the Ionic that changed color from left to right.

Furthermore, when I first tried updating, I had the unfortunate coincidence of their servers being down. In that case, the progress bar stuck at zero if it showed at all. I don't see a message like before at the top of this forum and other Fitbit web pages indicating the servers are down.

See this thread for what a proper update should look like. If you don't see this, don't wait for more than a few minutes. Reboot and do something else.

You might not have something right in your setup, such as a good WiFi link. I'd suggest you review your procedure. If not solved, call Fitbit support when they're open. I've found them to be very helpful

17 hours later, an error message.

My wifi setup is perfect.

The problem is the ionic and the software that Fitbit uses.

It is not reasonable to spend one entire weekend trying to make the watch work.

And the update is just a small step among several others to just put music in the watch.

So, another try.

Another day waiting.

Great!

The update failed and now, the ionic won't sync.

Every time I try to sync, it restarts itself.

Great!

Just great!

The update would just screw you up anyway. 1.5mi Run today. No GPS connection at any time-clear skies. I don’t remember having GPS issues before the last update.

Yes, adding music to the watch is worse than iTunes in the 90s.

I did this 32.10.20 update as part of setting up my new Ionic. Yet my GPS works great. I did a 4.75 hour bike ride today using the Ionic GPS. I started the night before with 100% battery. By the end of the ride I still had 51% battery left. Tonight it's 45%. So the GPS was using less than 10% battery per hour, or longer than 10 hours life as Fitbit claims.

Although I was in heavy woods, I found the Ionic was spectacularly accurate! I did some backtracking on a couple miles of the switchback trail up a mountain, and the two Ionic GPS tracks are either on top of itself or < 10' off. By comparison, I also had two high quality Garmin GPS units (Edge 1000 and eTrex Touch 30) on my handlebars. The tracks from these GPS were off by 100' or more. Whereas the repeated Ionic tracks were typically within the width of the trail, say 5-10', with the poor reception, the tracks from the Garmin were so bad the switchback trails were overlapping from upper to lower!

So I suspect something went bad with your Ionic. It can't just be the software update by itself, as it should have also affected my Ionic with the same update. Have you been able to talk with Fitbit support? You clearly have a legitimate complaint.

I was equally frustrated with the update at first. However, as I said before, if you have a WiFi connection, the entire update should be 30-60 minutes. And you should quickly see the progress bar moving in a fraction of that time on both the phone App and the watch face. Yes, it is not reasonable to spend the weekend waiting. You have a problem and should stop and try something else if you don't see something happening in a few minutes. Don't waste your time.

If you can't figure out what is wrong, call Fitbit support for advice on the procedure. And you could even have had something go wrong in the hardware. My feeling is that you need some help at this point, in order to not get more frustrated and erroneously blaming things that may or may not be relevant. You're just making yourself more upset with your approach.

I know I need the support team.

But the only thing they do is telling me to repeat 10 steps that I have
already done several times.

And the steps they suggest doesn't work.

And then, they send me an email with other 15 steps for trouble shooting.

I am literally all weekend trying to solve this.

Nothing.

I am convinced that I have a defective product.

I'm very pleased with my new FitBit Ionic Smart Watch, but I get only gibrish messages and I can't reply to my callers.

I use Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 cellular and I succeeded in pairing them, but I was very disappointed to

find out that you didn't added Hebrew fonts for the watch, like they have in the Apple watches.

It is very important for me that I could see the messages and answer the calls, and I hope you will do the effort to add those fonts in your new coming release

Thank you in advance,Iacov

@Osmar, I can understand your frustration. Like you, I was very frustrated at first not being able to use my nice new Ionic and trying all sorts of things to fix it.

Assuming you've followed through the procedures and trouble shooting steps carefully, at this point, you may want to check things outside the box. Maybe the download was corrupted or something odd like that.

Then go over your steps with Support and request a replacement.

Interesting that the problem occurred during the update on a previously working Ionic. It could be that the new software is not the issue, but rather that the update process itself is what messes up the Ionic. As reported by others, the February update caused some failures too.

I did everything.

I was only able to put music in the ionic once.

It is not reasonable to spend a weekend and take 35 steps to put music in
the device.

I am waiting for another response from the support team.

But I know they will tell me to do all the steps again and again and again
and again.

I just want to run without my phone!

Just that!

I agree on adding music. What a technology nightmare. Also it won’t work on 5g WiFi.

Could this update be the reason why my fitbit does not update anymore? Very frustrating. What do I do??
