Ionic- Fitbit OS 4.2.1 Firmware Update (72.1.9)

Update 1/20/2021: The firmware is now released to 100%

We've started rolling out Fitbit OS 4.2.1 Firmware Update for Ionic.

We release firmware updates to all customers in phases. The update will be available to everyone soon, and a banner will appear in the app when you can install the update. If you don’t see the banner yet, check the app again later.

*Firmware releases are not distributed based on region or location and can reach anyone no matter where you reside. We do not recommend performing a factory reset to force the update to your device as your data will be lost and you may not get the update. Please be patient and wait until you see the update banner inside of the Fitbit app to begin the firmware download.

Hi Mike. I was trying loads before Christmas same as you it always failed. But this time it was taking its time so I thought www it might be doing it, as I read it can take up to an hour so I left it to the updating whilst I was working on the car came back to it a few hours later and it's completely dead only thing that's on the screen is a Fitbit logo.. went through all the rescue procedure with customer support for them to say it's a display fault and I'm not covered under warranty. It's not a display fault its a common software issue that many other ionic users are being stung by when doing the firmware update. Very disappointed

My Ionic won't update at all. It's paired to my android phone but it won't bluetooth pair and sync. When I start the update from the app it keeps failing.  I've tried everything, over bluetooth, wifi. I've restarted my bluetooth and the ionic and the update just keeps failing.  I've tried the same with my windows 10 computer and 2 other android phones....nothing. So now I'm stuck. The app says a firmware update is required but the update won't work. This ionic was only activated Christmas day (Christmas present to replace my 'waterproof' charge 3 which got wet and stopped working). I'm extremely disappointed and won't be buying any more fitbits.

Mine is dead too... It's been a week already and no solutions have been given to me from customer service. Since I'm not covered under warranty, they just say I can buy a new one. Really? I mean... If Fitbit broke my watch because of their last update and they don't take care of the problem, what's the point in buying a new one that could end up broken as well because of a Fitbit negligence? If they broke it, they should fix it or replace it. It wasn't my fault, it was theirs.

The update killed the ability to swipe and the heartrate stopped working. This is bad.

Update: woke this morning and the screen was black and won’t display anything. It still vibrates when I get an alert on my phone but it’s now useless. Yesterday Fitbit support had me factory reset the watch but that didn’t solve the problems, it seems to have made them much worse. The watch is 14 months old so I think I am out of luck with a warranty.

The past 5 updates have been bricking people's Ionics.  I'm still on 70.7.14 because my Ionic took damage from that update but luckily I escaped the bricking others suffered.  I haven't taken another update since because I simply can not trust them to release something that's safe, and that if you are releasing software, that is a sad state when your users fall into that mindset.  When I got the email that Fitbit was officially part of Google I had hope that these disastrous updates would stop, but from what I've seen in this thread it seems that is not the case.

My watch is still on OS 2.1.1, and I haven't received an update notification.

Unfortunately, your comment could be pasted in the forum thread for any of the past 5 OS updates and not be out of place.  Why does each update destroy user's Ionics and why do they continue to fail to own up to the responsibility?

If you had a perfectly working car that you took in to the dealer for scheduled maintenance, and they did something to cause the engine to blow up as you left the garage, would they tell you that you can toss that car and buy a new one from them for 30% off?  No, they would make the situation right.  Why isn't that happening here?

I came here to troubleshoot why none of the apps on my ionic can be installed. But I have no update notification. After reading all of these posts I am glad that my ionic didn't update.
