Update 9/3/2020: This update should now be available to all customers. If you have any difficulty updating, make sure you are following the directions in this article, and then provide as many specific details as possible in your post so that we can assist.

We've started rolling out Fitbit OS 4.2 Firmware Update (71.6.19) for Ionic.

We release firmware updates to all customers in phases. The update will be available to everyone soon, and a banner will appear in the app when you can install the update. If you don’t see the banner yet, check the app again later.

*Firmware releases are not distributed based on region or location and can reach anyone no matter where you reside. We do not recommend performing a factory reset to force the update to your device as your data will be lost and you may not get the update. Please be patient and wait until you see the update banner inside of the Fitbit app to begin the firmware download.

Release notes can be found here.

HOW DO I UPDATE?

Step by step instructions for updating your Ionic device can be found here.

We recommend updating your Ionic over a home Wi-Fi network as this can greatly reduce the time it can take to get set up. For more information on connecting your Ionic to Wi-Fi, check out this article

@Paul46123, software compatibility with Windows 10 2004.

Pretty sure it's OS agnostic. Most brickings are when devices are connected to a phone. Perhaps it would be interesting to see bricking stats via Android vs iOS? I remember a few years ago that the Fitbit app seemed to works best on Windows Mobile. (W10M) Unfortunately the excellent OS is no more. ☹️

My Ionic failed in the middle of the update. The phone says it cannot contact the device but it started the update and now the Ionic just displays the fitbit logo. Dead

Phone prompted me to try Bluetooth but since the wireless favour my phone cannot see the watch as a Bluetooth device.

Mine just updated. I've been for a 70 min. brisk walk this morning and done another 45 min. of weight training but according to the new zone min. I've done nothing. Nice move Fitbit. I was thinking of replacing my partner's blaze for his birthday, but once again you've shown you can't get it right. Definitely moving to another brand now.

Terrible update indeed, erased my active minutes datas on the app, also it doesn’t make sense: 1 minute active becomes 2 minutes if it’s intense enough, what are even minutes? I hope Fitbit will roll back or at lest let the user chose the way active minutes are taken into account, if not I’ll start looking around

So good news, bad news

Good - The update arrived, it loaded OK, everything seems to work so far at least. Time will tell if issues arise after a while, battery life will prove interesting

Bad - Zone Minutes. What the @#@#. OK so a new way of measuring active minutes is introduced, no issues with that per see, but deleting my entire history of my previous Active Minutes, is inexcusable. Who tested this, can we have a name, we can then inundate him/her with emails, so they can realise how annoying just a small change in tech, can have a massive impact.

🤣🤣 Have you checked if your GPS still works?

Best Answer
Yes and no. It seems to sometimes, at others, no GPS.

I hate the latest update.  Please immediately revert the zone minutes and put back active minutes.  Zone minutes totally suck.  I went for a 3 mile walk and got 0 zone minutes.  I am not adjusting my workouts for some mythical metric.  Put back the old active minutes now.  I don't want zone minutes on my phone or my Ionic.

So after the firmware update, my Ionic no longer picks up heart rate, my sleep isn't monitored properly, and active minutes seem to suck. This has been fun.

I just hope you’re all under warranty... If not, you’re out of luck.

my device bricked but I’m out of warranty so Fitbit won’t replace mine.

Yeah, the update completely killed my Ionic. Totally dead. I've been offered a small discount on a replacement. So very helpful.

This happened to me too! No help from the support team or this forum - just a small discount offered on purchasing an expensive new device. If that's not terrible customer service, I don't know what is.

I never could get my Ionic to update or return to previous firmware and I see so much frustration in the Fitbit community with this issue. I followed all the suggested steps to get the update complete. I am now using an Apple watch. It's worth spending a little more money while getting a lot more product. Feeling like I wasted $250 on purchasing an Ionic.

My issues appear to be caused by untested (or not well tested) software! I've been a Fitbit guy for a long time and they told me they are sending me another but, if the software can't count stairs or BPM, I may need to go another direction. And, how do you calculate Calories Burned if you are analyzing BPM???

Not a great release but, maybe they will fix it. I was told they are sending me another but we will see and I will provide my result for your info.

Good Luck!

Or block our responses... There are a LOT of ways they could do that and just send back, "Thanks for your input. We are working the problem..." Or something similar. IMO, this release has badly uncut the customers' trust in Fitbit.
